Biomaterial-based delivery platforms for transdermal immunotherapy
Biomed Pharmacother. 2023 Jun 27;165:115048. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115048. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNowadays, immunotherapy is one of the most essential treatments for various diseases and a broad spectrum of disorders are assumed to be treated by altering the function of the immune system. For this reason, immunotherapy has attracted a great deal of attention and numerous studies on different approaches for immunotherapies have been investigated, using multiple biomaterials and carriers, from nanoparticles (NPs) to microneedles (MNs). In this review, the immunotherapy strategies, biomaterials, devices, and disea...

Investigation of novel HCV therapies: Boscia angustifalia & amp;Boscia senegalensis extracts loaded on galactosylated chitosan nanoparticles synthesized by eco-friendly method for HCV treatment
In this study, we have modified galactosylation by an eco-friendly method using l-ascorbic instead of hazardous reagents and we have loaded it with newly tested two Boscia extracts each in three different concentrations. The synthesized chitosan nanoparticles showed two dispersion peaks, at 196 ± 29 nm and 1.33 ± 0.36 μm, with a zeta potential of +3.3 ± 0.4mV with high stability in a range of 40.7 mV. The percentage of encapsulation of Boscia angustifalia extract was found to be 46.58 ± 1.33 % and for Boscia senegalensis extract was 9.77 ± 0.33 %. The release of Boscia angustifalia extract from the nanoparticles was ...

Prediction model of hepatitis B virus-related hepatocellular carcinoma in patients receiving antiviral therapy
J Formos Med Assoc. 2023 Jun 15:S0929-6646(23)00198-5. doi: 10.1016/j.jfma.2023.05.029. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, which ultimately leads to liver cirrhosis, hepatic decompensation, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), remains a significant disease burden worldwide. Despite the use of antiviral therapy (AVT) using oral nucleos(t)ide analogs (NUCs) with high genetic barriers, the risk of HCC development cannot be completely eliminated. Therefore, bi-annual surveillance of HCC using abdominal ultrasonography with or without tumor markers is recommended for at-risk populations. For...

Chronic Hepatitis B Virus: What an Internist Needs to Know: Serologic Diagnosis, Treatment Options, and Hepatitis B Virus Reactivation
Med Clin North Am. 2023 May;107(3):435-447. doi: 10.1016/j.mcna.2022.12.002. Epub 2023 Feb 20.ABSTRACTChronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a bloodborne infection which affects approximately 1.6 million persons in the U.S. and 292 million persons worldwide and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality due to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. HBV disproportionately affects foreign-persons from endemic regions such as sub-Saharan Africa and the Asian-Pacific region. Chronic HBV is diagnosed with positive HBsAg and detectable HBV DNA. Patients with immunoactive disease (elevated HBV DNA and serum ALT...

Viral hepatitis in persons living with HIV in the post-COVID era
AIDS Rev. 2023;25(1):1-13. doi: 10.24875/AIDSRev.M23000061.ABSTRACTCoinfection with hepatitis viruses A to E is frequent in persons living with HIV (PLWH) and causes significant morbidity and mortality. Oro-fecal transmissible hepatitis A and E mostly produce acute self-limited episodes in poor income regions and in non-vaccinated travelers. In high-income countries, outbreaks of hepatitis A occur in men having sex with men (MSM) and chronic hepatitis E is occasionally reported among PLWH with severe immunodeficiency. Chronic hepatitis B, C, and D are frequent in PLWH in highly endemic regions and globally in persons who i...
