Readability of online patient education materials for Merkel cell carcinoma
This study assessed the readability of online PEMs and factors that contribute to readability. We retrieved 50 PEM websites and extracted primary content. A readability software package calculated six readability statistics and generated a consen sus standard readability. Overall, only eight articles had a standard reading level of eighth-grade level or below (16%). The median standard reading level was at the 11th-grade level. We also examined MCC PEMs from cancer treatment institution websites (N = 20). We determined whether they contained institution-specific information, meaning they contained text information abou...

Continuing five or more locoregional therapies before living donor salvage liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma is related to poor recurrence-free survival.
Conclusion: Continuing five or more locoregional therapies for recurrent HCC after LR is related to poor recurrence-free survival after SLT. PMID: 30182022 [PubMed]

Epidemiology of Liver Cancer in Latin America: Current and Future Trends
Semin Liver Dis DOI: 10.1055/s-0039-3399561Over 38,000 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are estimated to occur in Latin America annually. The region is characterized by sociocultural heterogeneity and economic disparities, which impose barriers in addressing this major health issue. A significant proportion of patients are still diagnosed in the later stages of the disease, although efforts to implement effective screening programs have been reported by referral centers. While viral hepatitis remains the predominant etiology of liver disease among HCC cases in Latin America, a high prevalence of fatty liver disease ...

A historical turning point for the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma: ınhibition of ımmune checkpoint.
Conclusion: Advanced RCC has high morbidity and mortality with an increasing prevalence. Following tyrosine kinase inhibitors, checkpoint inhibitors have a great influence on treatment of advanced RCC, especially the combination of these two strategies. In 2019 these combined strategies demonstrated 5% complete remission with up to 60% objective response rate. While not immediately, but perhaps in the near future, advanced RCC will become a manageable chronic disease, even if a cure is not possible. PMID: 31942809 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Utilization of Facebook for support and education by patients with skin cancer
The expanding role of social media in medical care has resulted in dermatology patients seeking support online regarding personal experience with diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer. Owing to increased privacy settings in closed Facebook groups, the current study analyzed themes of keratinocyte carcinoma patients ’ posts within a relatively private social media network. Although the majority of messages included sharing personal experience and provided psychosocial support (50%), there were a significant number of posts offering medical advice (35%), with the majority of such replies being unsupported by e vidence-bas...

Current status of lung cancer in Spain: a retrospective analysis of patient characteristics, use of healthcare resources and in-hospital mortality.
Conclusions: Preventive and early detection measures are recommended, continuing to focus on females. In parallel, a multidisciplinary approach could optimise patient journey considering the presence of disease comorbidities, although its role in lung cancer mortality should be further explored. Second primary cancers: a retrospective analysis of real world data using the enhanced medical research engine ConSoRe in a French comprehensive cancer center
CONCLUSION: The data mining tool ConSoRe contributes to access to real world data, and to better characterize patients with SPC. Expanding such approach to any comprehensive center will allow a global overview of the follow-up of patients with cancer, and help to improve long-term management and adapt surveillance.PMID:34091824 | DOI:10.1007/s10147-021-01963-3

Prior-knowledge treatment planning for volumetric arc therapy using feature-based database mining
Treatment planning for volumetric arc therapy (VMAT) is a lengthy process that requires many rounds of optimizations to obtain the best treatment settings and optimization constraints for a given patient’s geometry. We propose a feature-selection search engine that explores previously treated cases of similar anatomy, returning the optimal plan configurations and attainable DVH constraints. Using an institutional database of 83 previously treated cases of prostate carcinoma treated with volumetric-modulated arc therapy, the search procedure first finds the optimal isocenter position with an optimization procedure, then r...
