Association Between Achieved Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Levels and Long-Term Cardiovascular and Safety Outcomes: An Analysis of FOURIER-OLE
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, long-term achievement of lower LDL-C levels, down to <20 mg/dL (<0.5 mmol/L), was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular outcomes with no significant safety concerns.REGISTRATION: URL: https://www.CLINICALTRIALS: gov; Unique identifier: NCT01764633.PMID:36779348 | DOI:10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.122.063399

Impact of Incident Venous Thromboembolism on Risk of Arterial Thrombotic Diseases.
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings imply that women and young men with VTE have higher risk of arterial thrombotic disease than those without VTE. However, only 1% of the arterial thrombotic events in the population are attributed to VTE. PMID: 24270266 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Genetic variation in NEDD4L, an epithelial sodium channel regulator, is associated with cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular death
Conclusion:The NEDD4L salt sensitivity-associated genotype was associated with higher blood pressure, which may translate into increased risk for CVD morbidity and mortality. Interestingly, there was no association with stroke suggesting that the association is partially blood pressure independent.

Red cell distribution width in relation to incidence of coronary events and case fatality rates: a population-based cohort study
Conclusions In this population-based study of subjects without history of CE or stroke, high RDW was associated with increased incidence of fatal CE. No relationship was observed for incidence of non-fatal CE.

Fasting Levels of High-Sensitivity Growth Hormone Predict Cardiovascular Morbidity and Mortality The Malmö Diet and Cancer Study
BackgroundBoth pathological excess and deficiency of growth hormone (GH) are associated with cardiovascular mortality.ObjectivesThe goal of this study was to test whether fasting levels of growth hormone measured with a high-sensitivity assay (hs-GH) predict cardiovascular morbidity and mortality at the population level.MethodsWe studied 4,323 participants (age 46 to 68 years; mean age 58 years; 59% women) of the Swedish, population-based Malmö Diet and Cancer study examined in 1991 to 1994. Using multivariate-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models, we related baseline levels of fasting hs-GH to incidence of coronary ar...

Cardiovascular disease in Europe 2014: epidemiological update
This paper provides an update for 2014 on the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and in particular coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke, across the countries of Europe. Cardiovascular disease causes more deaths among Europeans than any other condition, and in many countries still causes more than twice as many deaths as cancer. There is clear evidence in most countries with available data that mortality and case-fatality rates from CHD and stroke have decreased substantially over the last 5–10 years but at differing rates. The differing recent trends have therefore led to increasing inequalities in the burden...

Presence of gallstones and the risk of cardiovascular diseases: The EPIC-Germany cohort study
Conclusions Our results indicate an increased cardiovascular risk for gallstone formers, which cannot be counteracted by gallbladder removal and opens up perspectives for individualized prevention strategies.

Cardiovascular disease in Europe -- epidemiological update 2015
This article provides an update for 2015 on the burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD), with a particular focus on coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke, across the countries of Europe. Cardiovascular disease is still the most common cause of death within Europe, causing almost two times as many deaths as cancer across the continent. Although there is clear evidence, where data are available, that mortality from CHD and stroke has decreased substantially over the last 5–10 years, there are still large inequalities found between European countries, in both current rates of death and the rate at which these decreases...

A stop-codon of the phosphodiesterase 11A gene is associated with elevated blood pressure and measures of obesity
Objective: To identify stop-codon variants associated with blood pressure (BP). Methods: Illumina exome chip was genotyped in 5453 individuals of the population-based Malmö Diet and Cancer Study. We compared BP levels between carriers and noncarriers of all stop-codon variants found in at least 10 individuals and characterized these further based on literature evidence of functionality. Next, the association to ischemic stroke was evaluated in 2278 cases of ischemic stroke and 5969 controls. Results: We identified 19 stop-codon variants with nominally significant BP associations (P

Serum Uric Acid and Mortality Form Cardiovascular Disease: EPOCH-JAPAN Study.
CONCLUSION: This large pooled analysis in Japan suggested a J- or U-shaped relationship between serum uric acid levels and cardiovascular mortality. The highest quintile of serum uric acid levels was associated with increased cardiovascular disease mortality in both Japanese men and women. PMID: 26887218 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Choice of New Oral Anticoagulant Agents Versus Vitamin K Antagonists in Atrial Fibrillation: FANTASIIA Study
Conclusion: Medical and social variables were associated with prescription of NOAC. Major bleeding, hemorrhagic stroke, university education, and higher glomerular filtration rate were more frequent among patients under NOAC. On the contrary, patients with history of cancer or bradyarrhythmias more frequently received VKA.

Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) for the management of venous thromboembolism
Learning objectives Understand the importance of venous thrombosis in cardiovascular medicine. Appreciate the mode of action of different oral anticoagulants. Recall the uses, risks and benefits of each non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants. Introduction Thrombosis is the common pathophysiology responsible for ischaemic heart disease, ischaemic stroke and venous thromboembolism (VTE), and a major contributor to the global disease burden.1 This effect is markedly more pronounced by considering the view that cancer is also a thrombotic disease.2 3 Cardiovascular disease (CVD, manifesting as acute coronary syndromes, m...

Insights on mid-term TAVR performance: 3-year clinical and echocardiographic results from the CoreValve ADVANCE study
ConclusionsOur 3-year data demonstrate significant hemodynamic benefits and durable symptom relief after CoreValve prosthesis implantation. Postprocedural patient management should be carefully considered, since postprocedural valve-related events were identified as independent predictors of mid-term mortality.Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01074658.
