Multi-disciplinary management of recurrent gastrointestinal stromal tumor harboring KIT exon 11 mutation with the switch-control kinase inhibitor ripretinib and surgery
Oncoscience. 2023 Sep 20;10:38-43. doi: 10.18632/oncoscience.586. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTRipretinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that was approved by the United States FDA in 2020 for treatment of advanced gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in patients who received prior treatment with three or more tyrosine kinase inhibitors. In this case report, we show the durable clinical benefit achieved in a patient with GIST by using ripretinib and repeated timely surgical resection of limited disease progression. The total time on ripretinib was 43 months which is longer than the current reported data from ripretinib clinica...

Unique Considerations in Early Detection, Risk, and Awareness of Endometrial Cancer in Black Women
Cancer Control. 2023 Jan-Dec;30:10732748231202952. doi: 10.1177/10732748231202952.ABSTRACTEndometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer in the United States. Over the last several decades, the incidence of aggressive tumors, and thus the rate of death from disease, has increased significantly. The population most affected by these epidemiologic shifts are Black women. Symptom awareness, lack of treatment access, and failure of providers to provide guideline-concordant care are just some of the drivers behind these changes. Race as a social construct has historically categorized women into groups that are not ref...

Disparities in Timeliness of Endometrial Cancer Care: A Scoping Review
CONCLUSIONS: Evidence gaps on disparities in timeliness of endometrial cancer care reveal emphasis of patient-driven help-seeking delays, reliance on health care-derived databases, underutilization of participatory methods, and a paucity of intervention studies.SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: Given that PROSPERO was not accepting systematic scoping review protocols at the time this study began, this study protocol was shared a priori through Open Science Framework on January 13, 2021 (doi: 10.17605/OSF.IO/V2ZXY), and through peer review publication on April 13, 2021 (doi: https://doi.org/10.1186/s13643-021-01649-x).PMID:37...

Multi-Cancer Early Detection: The New Frontier in Cancer Early Detection
Annu Rev Med. 2023 Sep 20. doi: 10.1146/annurev-med-050522-033624. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe new generation of cancer early detection tests holds remarkable promise for revolutionizing and changing the paradigm of cancer early detection. Dozens of cancer early detection tests are being developed and evaluated. Some are already commercialized and available for use, most as a complement to and not in place of existing recommended cancer screening tests. This review evaluates existing single- and multi-cancer early detection tests (MCEDs), discussing their performance characteristics including sensitivity, specificity...

Teleoncology: Novel Approaches for Improving Cancer Care in North America
Cureus. 2023 Aug 16;15(8):e43562. doi: 10.7759/cureus.43562. eCollection 2023 Aug.ABSTRACTDue to widespread healthcare workforce shortages, many patients living in remote and rural North America currently have reduced access to various medical specialists. These shortages, coupled with the aging North American population, highlight the need to transform contemporary healthcare delivery systems. The exchange of medical information via telecommunication technology, known as telemedicine, offers promising solutions to address the medical needs of an aging population and the increased demand for specialty medical services. Thi...

Dissemination and Implementation of a Community Health Worker Intervention for Disparities in Palliative Care (DeCIDE PC): a study protocol for a hybrid type 1 randomized controlled trial
DISCUSSION: We expect the DeCIDE PC intervention to improve integration of palliative care, reduce multilevel barriers to care, enhance clinic and patient linkage to resources, and ultimately improve palliative care outcomes for African American patients with advanced cancer. If found to be effective, the DeCIDE PC intervention may be a transformative model with the potential to guide large-scale adoption of promising strategies to improve palliative care use and decrease disparities in end-of-life care for African American patients with advanced cancer in the United States.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Registered on ClinicalTrials....

Initial versus early switch to targeted therapy during first-line treatment among patients with biomarker-positive advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer in the United States
CONCLUSION: In both unadjusted and adjusted analyses, there were no differences in the clinical outcomes observed among patients with a/mNSCLC in this study. This study found that initiating chemotherapy with an early switch to targeted therapy (within 56 days) of receiving biomarker positive results may be an acceptable strategy for a patient for whom immediate care is needed.PMID:37717466 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctarc.2023.100761

Addressing Inequalities in Breast Cancer Care Delivery
Surg Oncol Clin N Am. 2023 Oct;32(4):799-810. doi: 10.1016/j.soc.2023.05.009. Epub 2023 Jun 16.ABSTRACTBreast cancer treatment, timeliness of care, and clinical outcomes are inferior for patients of Black race and Hispanic ethnicity, and the origin of these inequities is multifactorial. Owing to aggregate reporting of data in the United States for patients of Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander ancestry, disparities within and across these groups are difficult to appreciate. In large part due to low prevalence, male breast cancer remains understudied, and treatment algorithms are primarily extrapolated from resear...

The Philadelphia Lung Cancer Learning Community: A Multi-Health-System, Citywide Approach to Lung Cancer Screening
CONCLUSIONS: The sociodemographic characteristics of LCS participants in Philadelphia varied by health system and neighborhood. These results suggest that a multi-center approach to LCS can identify vulnerable areas for future tailored approaches to improving LCS uptake. Future directions should leverage these findings to develop and test collaborative strategies to increase LCS at the community and regional levels.PMID:37713466 | DOI:10.1093/jncics/pkad071

Self-assembling Gn head ferritin nanoparticle vaccine provides full protection from lethal challenge of < em > Dabie bandavirus < /em > in aged ferrets
This study demonstrates that DBV GnH-FT nanoparticles provide an efficient vaccine efficacy in mouse and aged ferret models and should be an outstanding vaccine candidate targeted for the aged population against fatal DBV infection. IMPORTANCE Dabie bandavirus (DBV) is an emerging tick-borne virus that causes severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) in infected patients. Human SFTS symptoms progress from fever, fatigue, and muscle pain to the depletion of white blood cells and platelets with fatality rates up to 30%. The recent spread of its vector tick to over 20 states in the United States increases the potenti...
