Challenge of diagnosing ANCA-associated vasculitis during COVID-19 pandemic: a missed 'window of opportunity
There is concern around coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and rheumatic diseases. Systemic vasculitis was the fourth most common rheumatic disease among patients hospitalised for COVID-19.1 However, the diagnosis of anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibodies (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) can be challenging during COVID-19 pandemic for several reasons: first, clinical presentation of patients with AAV partially overlaps with COVID-19; second, patients with initial symptoms of AAV may be concerned to seek medical help in order not to get into close contact with other patients; and third, diagnosis may be delayed because non...

Kinetics of specific anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgM, IgA, and IgG responses during the first 12 months after SARS-CoV-2 infection: A prospective longitudinal study
We present the first study in Africa to measure the kinetics of antibody response (IgA, IgM and IgG) to SARS-CoV-2 over one year. Most participants remained seropositive for anti-RBD IgG after one year but showed a significant decline in antibody titers.

Factors Influencing the Effectiveness of Adopting Electronic Medical Record-Based Reporting Systems for Notifiable Disease Surveillance: A Quantitative Analysis
This study interviewed staff from hospitals with a coverage that represented 51.39% of the notifiable disease reporting volume in Taiwan. Exact logistic regression was employed to determine which factors influenced the effectiveness of Taiwan ’s EMR-RS. The results revealed that the influential factors included hospitals’ early participation in the EMR-RS project, frequent consultation with the information technology (IT) provider of the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (TWCDC), and retrieval of data from at least one internal data base. They also revealed that using an EMR-RS resulted in more timely, accurate, and c...

Africa: New Research Shows How Covid-19 Affects Younger Children and Those From Deprived Areas
[The Conversation Africa] At the heights of the pandemic, particularly since 2021, many children and teenagers admitted to hospital had COVID. However, it was never clear what proportion of them were in hospital because of COVID, indicating quite severe illness, or for a different reason (such as an injury), but just happened to test positive for COVID during their admission.

False-Positive Human Immunodeficiency Virus Screening Results in Pregnancy During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFalse-positive human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) test results are rare but have been documented in the setting of certain underlying conditions such as Epstein-Barr virus, metastatic cancer, and certain autoimmune conditions. A retrospective cohort study in a large hospital system was conducted to compare the occurrence of false-positive HIV fourth-generation test results before and after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in a population of pregnant patients (N=44,187; 22,073 pre-COVID and 22,114 during COVID). The ...

Rare link between coronavirus vaccines and Long Covid –like illness starts to gain acceptance
COVID-19 vaccines have saved millions of lives, and the world is gearing up for a new round of boosters. But like all vaccines, those targeting the coronavirus can cause side effects in some people, including rare cases of abnormal blood clotting and heart inflammation. Another apparent complication, a debilitating suite of symptoms that resembles Long Covid, has been more elusive, its link to vaccination unclear and its diagnostic features ill-defined. But in recent months, what some call Long Vax has gained wider acceptance among doctors and scientists, and some are now working to better understand and treat its symptoms...

Immunologic and vascular biomarkers of mortality in critical COVID-19 in a South African cohort
DiscussionThese results show the pattern of dysregulation in critical COVID-19 in a Sub-Saharan African cohort. They suggest that fatal COVID-19 involved excessive activation of cytotoxic cells and the NLRP3 (nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich–containing family, pyrin domain–containing-3) inflammasome. Furthermore, superinfection and endothelial dysfunction with thrombosis might have contributed to mortality. HIV infection did not affect the outcome. A clinically relevant biosignature including PCT, pH and lymphocyte percentage on differential count, had an 84.8% sensitivity for mortality, and outperformed the Lum...
