Nora Ephron’s Final Act - NYTimes.com
At 10 p.m. on a Friday night in a private room on the 14th Floor of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital on 68th and York Avenue, my mother was lying in her bed hallucinating, in that dream space people go on their way to being gone. She spoke of seeing trees, possibly a forest. And she mentioned to Nick, my stepfather, that she had been to the theater where her play was showing and that the audience was full. In reality, she had not left the hospital in a month, and the play, "Lucky Guy," was nearly a year away from opening. My brother, Max, and I stood there in disbelief. Though it had been weeks since her blood count showed any ...

From Abby: Do You Have What It Takes?
Abby is an RN, a PWD, and en route to becoming a CDE.  (Her last name will eventually snap off due to all of the accompanying letters.)  As she's worked through her schooling and now her experience in the field, her scope of what she's learned through life with diabetes as a patient and what she's learned through school and experience as a nurse are very different, and both play a rule in her pursuit of a CDE certification.  *   *   *My goal when applying to nursing school in 2009 was simple: become a Certified Diabetes Educator. I wanted NOTHING to do with nursing, and I for sure did not...

Asthma, atrial fibrillation, and attitude
David posted these important observations he made about his own health. I am a 48 year old male and have been healthy and fit for the majority of my life. I am an avid cyclist and have been so for twenty years now. I have the good fortune of excellent blood pressure and heart rate and my cholesterol and triglycerides are in the healthy range. Until recently, my only notable health challenge has been exercise-induced asthma. I have not been able to ride my bike without an inhaler since I was a kid. Anyone who uses a salbutamol inhaler will be aware that it is a nasty inhalant and can make you agitated and irritable. I have ...

The Skin Problem That Goes Hand in Hand With IBD
I have a swollen, red, and very painful inflammation on my foot — and it’s called erythema-nodosum. Erythe-what? Erythema nodosum is a common skin manifestation, occurring in about 10 to 15 percent of people with inflammatory bowel disease, particularly those with Crohn’s disease. It results in reddish, painful, tender lumps that are most commonly located in the front of the legs below the knees. These tender lumps, or nodules, can range in size from 1 to 5 centimeters. Even though they are commonly found on the legs, I have had them on my arms in the past. I have read that the erythema-nodosum usually com...

October 2011: How is Your Crohn’s Today?
Hello everyone! I hope that you are doing well today! It is time for us to have another edition of ‘How is your Crohn’s today?’. For those who are new to the blog, every now and then I like to check in with everyone to hear how you are doing and how your Crohn’s is holding up. Here’s how I’ve been doing: I started the Stem Cell Clinical Trial and had the first infusion on the 12th of October. I was really nervous about the first one since I don’t have good success with medications (I always seem to get those rare side effects!), so I asked my husband to take me. It was good that I brought him because they...

Hello Everyone! I hope that you are doing well today! It is time for us to have another edition of How Is Your Crohn’s Today?. For those of you who are new to the blog, every now and then I like to check in with everyone for updates and your Crohn’s is holding up. I’ll tell you how I am doing, and you reply in the comments section about your current status. I finally went to see my rheumatologist and did my yearly bone scan. I was reluctant to go because I was so afraid that my bone density would be worse and I have been anxious about taking the Reclast medication again. As I wrote in a previous blog, I have b...
