A letter to our member of parliament
Today, in desperation, we sent a letter to our MP. Usually such letters get a boiler plate response, dictated by Conservative Central Office. We aren’t hopeful about changing the mind of our MP. Before he was elected he ran a shockingly misogynist web site, now deleted. But it’s essential to do what one can to about democracy while we still have some. Dear Mike Penning I doubt whether this will be the only letter you’ll get along these lines.1. The Conservative party used to be the party of business. Brexit has destituted many small businesses and impoverished the UK. That’s not  jus...

For Ukrainian Refugees in Poland, Livelihood Needs Will Follow Humanitarian Ones
Host countries such as Poland that accept refugees in great need are to be lauded for their humanitarian response, and for the public good they provide to the global community. To increase the likelihood that these host countries find effective policy solutions, they should view the influx of refugees not merely as a challenge, but as a significant opportunity to be seized for aiding their post-COVID recovery. Russia Shows the Limits of Propaganda
Will DuffieldDespite widespread concerns about the influence of English ‐language Russian state media such as Russia Today and Sputnik, Russian claims about its invasion of Ukraine have not taken hold abroad. This failure seems puzzling.Journalists andpoliticians have alleged that potent Russian information operations tipped the 2016 American election to Trump, and the Brexit vote to “leave”. We need not assess those claims here. Instead, a closer look at the differences between 2016 and now point toward a better understanding of misinformation online, an understanding favoring “more speech” rather t...

Propaganda
I don ' t reject comments just because I disagree with the commenter ' s opinion. If you actually read the comments, you will see that I often publish comments by people who disagree with me in some way. I do reject comments that are factually ridiculous or illogical. Sometimes I publish them and rebut them, but I can ' t be bothered to do that with all of the nonsense that comes my way. Because I don ' t read Faux News, Newsmax, Onan, or Russian propaganda, half the time I don ' t even know what the bizarre conspiracy theory is that they ' re talking about. But just for example, claiming that NATO broke up Yugoslavia...

CBP Should Grant Parole to Fleeing Ukrainians Using ESTA
David J. BierMany European countriesare already accepting hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the country. But so far, the Biden administration has not made it any easier for them to travel to the United States. Even if President Biden decides he should provide an alternative to their European displacement, the details will matter. As the world sawfor Afghans fleeing the Taliban to the United States, an overly bureaucratic process can doom even the most well ‐intended immigration efforts.Anyone boarding a U.S.-bound plane must have authorization to travel —a restriction mainly enforced by the ai...

Pithiatism Redux
BY MARTIN SAMUELS Those of us in medicine have all seen the famous painting of the Tuesday afternoon lessons at the Salpȇtrière in Paris in the 19th century. In Pierre Aristide André Brouillet’s painting, one can clearly see the great professor, Jean-Martin Charcot, holding forth while the patient, Blanche Whitman, is being supported by a tall young man, Joseph Jules Francois Felix Babinski, the Chef de Clinique (the chief resident) and allegedly the favorite to succeed Charcot. He never did as he was failed repeatedly on the exam necessary to become a faculty member at the university by a jealous, xenophobic, anti...

Our patients become an inextricable part of our lives [PODCAST]
“The weekend after Isabelle ’s discharge, I take my shoes outside onto the driveway. The sky is a brilliant blue, and green tinges of leaves poke through shells of buds; the wind slips through my fleece. I scrub the spots of blood with an antibacterial wipe, and tan shoe polish comes off instead, leaving the burgundyRead more …Our patients become an inextricable part of our lives [PODCAST] originally appeared inKevinMD.com. O2Ring Keeps an Eye on Your Blood Oxygen Level: A Medgadget Review
Conclusion We found O2Ring to be a convenient, easy-to-use pulse oximeter. It is a particularly appealing option for medical conditions that require prolonged monitoring of blood oxygen levels, such as sleep apnea, chronic lung disease, and more recently, COVID-19 pneumonia. O2Ring can be purchased from Wellue’s official website and Amazon. It retails for $165, which is slightly above the price point of other comparable products. Nevertheless, the device may offer peace of mind to both users and their loved ones. Product page: O2Ring Oximeter Continuous Ring Oxygen Monitor Related flashbacks: Smart Ring ...

Eight Reasons For Ending Joe Biden ’s Travel Bans
Ryan Bourne and Brad SubramaniamBack in July, Ioutlined why Joe Biden ’s crude COVID-19 travel bans on non-Americans coming from Europe, India, and a few other countries no longer made any sense from a public health perspective.Talk in Washington at the time was of lifting these restrictions by September. Well, here we are, mid-way through that month and the restrictions are going strong. Officials and diplomats now seem to think October or even Thanksgiving are the earliest potential dates for their removal. Some ponder whether the political incentives might point towards inactionuntil the mid-terms...which would mean b...

Moscow Hesitated in Poland — Will It in Belarus?
Forty years ago, Russia used a major military exercise in part to scare Poland ' s communist leaders into cracking down on protesters. A similar Russian exercise now could be aimed in part at pressuring Belarus. If so, the West could respond in several ways. (Source: The RAND Blog)

The Case to Realign Parkinson ’s Disease Research
Conclusion PD research is spread out in many directions, but after 50 years of trying, it is still decades away from finding a cure.  That realization must sink in to its participants before a change in approach is accepted. The requisite changes are: 1) a focus on multivariate solutions; 2) an overlay industry structure that coordinates the focus and funding of PD research and tracks performance and 3) a modified approach to FDA regulation.  Once these changes are put in place, the funding of PD research should be increased substantially over the next several years with the singular objective of finding a cure...
