New Milgram replication finds 90 per cent of Polish participants willing to deliver highest shock
By guest blogger Ginny Smith Fifty years ago, in Connecticut, a series of infamous experiments were taking place. The volunteers believed they were involved in an investigation into learning and memory, and that they would be administering shocks to a test subject whenever he answered questions incorrectly. But despite pretences, the scientist behind the research, Stanley Milgram, wasn’t actually interested in learning. The real topic of study? Obedience. Milgram recorded how far his participants were willing to go when told to deliver larger and larger shocks. In one version of the study, 26 out of 40 participants conti...

Lots of Changes
Over a month ago, my psychiatrist prescribed Topomax for my migraines. She asked how often I was getting them which I had not considered, but it was about half of the month.Since I started taking it, I have had one migraine not long after I started taking it, and that is it! I feel SO much better. How in the world did I live that way? No choice I suppose. Now just cold like allergy symptoms that I am working on.I have had some personality changes though since I started taking Topomax. Some good, some not so good. Since it has basically given me my life back, I need to work it out.But sinc...

Men think women will be impressed by a tattoo, but they ’re not – Polish study
By Alex Fradera Men with tattoos are likely to provide serious competition for a woman’s attention, at least in the eyes of other guys, but women themselves actually aren’t that impressed. That’s according to research published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, where 2584 heterosexual men and women from Poland viewed photos of shirtless men, sometimes digitally modified so that their arm was emblazoned with a smallish black tattoo depicting a generic symbol. The 215 men among the participants rated the inked bods as more attractive than tattoo-free comparison models, which presumably reflects in ...

Is store brand mouthwash as good as name brands? Episode 153
This study was published in Cell Regeneration Journal and it shows that stem cells from urine could be grown into tiny tooth-like structures. The researchers are from China and hope that someday their technique could be used to replace lost teeth. Of course not everyone agrees with this approach. One stem cell researcher noted that that “that goal faces many challenges.” No kidding. But seriously, there are other, richer, sources of stem cells than urine so this seems like an odd choice. Regardless, just in case this catches on I’ve begun designing companion products to go with urine teeth the first product I’ll be...

Whip It Good
A 29-year-old man presented to the emergency department with numbness and tingling of his entire body for three weeks. He said the symptoms started when he entered a drug rehab facility for benzodiazepine and opiate abuse, and that the last time he used either drug was more than a month ago. His initial vitals demonstrated a heart rate of 106 bpm, blood pressure of 115/70 mm Hg, temperature of 98.6°F, respiratory rate of 14 bpm, and SPO2 of 99% on room air.He is well nourished, alert, and oriented but anxious-appearing. His neurologic exam demonstrates no ataxia on ambulation with cranial nerves II-XII intact. His motor e...

Zika or bug spray: which is more dangerous? Episode 147
I thought for sure we’d be back in the country by now but before we could board the plane Perry was detained by the police. I’m still not sure what’s going on but apparently it has something to do him getting robbed on the way back to the hotel.   Don’t worry though, you can still listen to this encore episode where we discuss the infamous “date rape” nail polish controversy and the safety of DEET, the active ingredient in mosquito sprays. Click here for the original show notes. (Source: thebeautybrains.com)

Are boar bristle brushes better for your hair? Episode 138
Are boar bristle brushes better for your hair? Georgina asks…Are boar bristle brushes better for your hair? I’m looking at a Mason Pearson brush that’s about $100 and I want to know if it’s worth it. It’s tough to give a definitive answer because as you might imagine there aren’t many double blind, peer reviewed scientific studies comparing different hair brushes. But we DID find a couple of studies that may be helpful. The first study, “A Statistical Analysis of Hair Breakage,” pointed out the something that seems obvious: different combs and brushes will affect your hair differently depending on their str...

A Most Interesting Data Set Covering the Longevity of Polish Elite Athletes Across Much of the 20th Century
Today I noticed an open access paper in which the authors examine mortality data for Polish Olympic athletes over the past 90 years or so, and compare it with established historical data for the general population. This blends two topics that are occasionally covered here at Fight Aging!: firstly, the growth in human life expectancy in recent history and its causes, and secondly the topic of how regular exercise and life expectancy interact. It is the present consensus that elite athletes, those at the top of their profession, live longer than the rest of us, but it remains open to debate as to whether this is because more...

Would you use spray on nail polish? Episode 109
In this study, researchers looked at a variety of products to see how well they repelled mosquitos. Here’s what they found. DEET worked. It provided protection for 240 min or more. And it was dose dependent. More DEET, better protection. The Cutter product with oil of lemon eucalyptus which has a high concentration of p-methane-3-8-diol also worked. This would be a good alternative for people afraid of DEET. Other products like Avon Skin-so-soft bath oil and skin-so-soft with bug guard had practically no effect. Neither did the EcoSmart organic insect repellent which is made up of different oils like rosemary oil, lemong...

Can nail polish really be healthy?
KrisInPhilly asks…Can nail polish, like from Remedy Nails, be “healthy”? Is their claim that they have the most unique polish on the market true? The Beauty Brains respond Kris thanks for such a great question. I just wish I had a definitive answer about Remedy Nails. Healthy polish? I had trouble finding much information about how Remedy Nails claims to be so healthy and unique so I wrote to the company asking for an explanation. Unfortunately they have not responded. So, I can’t really tell for sure how they support their claims. In my humble opinion, it all depends on how you define “healthy.” Having worked...
