Can LED lights cure nail polish?
Anonymous asks…What is the difference between the polishes and why do some require UV where others require LED? If I buy an LED lamp, will that still work on Shellac polishes, which normally use a UV lamp? Or if I buy a UV lamp will this work on the ones that normally use LED? Does the wattage of the lamp make a big difference to the curing time? The Beauty Brains respond: To get a definitive answer to this question I spoke with a marketing coordinator for Nail Systems International, one of the top manufacturers of nail lamps. Here’s what I was told: “UV and LED lamps are different. Generally a gel polish will cure ...

Unlike Data from U.S., Data on Youth Electronic Cigarette Use in Poland is Concerning
A new set of cross-sectional surveys of e-cigarette use among Polish students ages 15-19 was just published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.(See: Goniewicz ML, et al. Rise in electronic cigarette use among adolescents in Poland. Journal of Adolescent Health 2014; 55:713-715.)Like its U.S. counterpart (the National Youth Tobacco Survey), the survey from Poland found a dramatic increase in experimentation with electronic cigarettes during the period 2010/11 - 2013/14. Experimentation increased from 16.8% to 62.1%.Different from the U.S. study, however, the Poland study found very high rates of current use of electronic c...

America’s Relationship with Poland: Military Alliance or Social Club?
Doug Bandow Polish Ambassador Ryszard Schnepf has a tough job: making nice with American officials after his boss in Warsaw, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, indiscreetly denounced Poland’s alliance with America as “worthless.”  The ambassador responded to my earlier article and made a convincing case that Poles and Americans are friends.  He had less success in explaining why Washington should extend a security guarantee to Warsaw, putting U.S. citizens at risk in any the war that might result. NATO is a military alliance.  But as I point out in my latest article in National Interest online, “in...

Poland’s Alliance with America: Worthless to Whom?
Doug Bandow The outspoken Polish Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, apparently believes his nation’s alliance with America is “worthless.”  Washington should not race to reassure him.  Instead, Warsaw should demonstrate why it is worthy of Washington’s support. A weekly Polish publication received a recording of Sikorski’s conversation in which he declared:  “This Polish-American union is worthless.  It is even harmful because it gives Poland a false sense of security.  Complete [B.S.].  We get into conflicts with the Germans, with Russia, and we think everything’s great becau...

Nail Polish: Is it Dangerous?
Today’s guest post is written by Selina Torres. As we work toward becoming a healthier, well-informed society, not only are we questioning what we’re putting in our bodies, but what we’re putting on them.  In recent years, the subject of nail polish has become a hot topic for debate. What’s In Our Polish? First and foremost, when we think of the potential damaging effects of nail polish, the chemical composition comes to mind.  Nail polishes are made of four basic ingredients: Solvents: Common solvents are ethyl acetate, butyl acetate and alcohol.  Solvents are used to dissolve and mix the other ingredient...

Is 3-D Nail Polish Actually 3-D?
There are crazy new nail trends every five seconds, but I especially love when polish companies create new funky formulas to make nail art as easy as a regular mani. I'm also lived in NYC in the '90s, when glitter-bombed raves were cool, and so a little pop of glitzy glitter still makes me feel like a cool big kid -- even though, yes, I am a big kid now. Needless to say, when I got wind of one of Orly's latest launches, these 3-D FX polishes -- which, as you may now expect, are glitter-heavy -- I was stoked. And, of course, I had to try almost instantly. (So there's the kid in me. Impatience. Duh.) (Source: The ND Blog: No...

But no matter how careful you are, nails can get stained. So, when my friend asked "How do I erase bright-polish stains without scary chemicals?" I was glad I had the answer! What is the foil method for removing nail polish?
Rachael says…I read your Facebook post about Clown Puke nail polish. The article you linked to talked about something called the “foil method” of removing nail polish. What can you tell us about that? The Beauty Brains respond: First of all, we have to point out that “Clown Puke” is the best nail polish name ever!  As far as the so called “foil method” is concerned, it’s a faster way of removing nail polish, however it involves a hidden danger you need to be aware of. Curses, foiled again BeautyGeeks does a nice job of explaining how the foil method works. Essentially, you s...

Will Drying Your Nail Polish with UV Lights Give You Finger Cancer?
Rozy asks…How likely is it that you will get skin cancer from gel nails?  Would putting sunblock on your fingers before getting a gel mani help?  The Beauty Brains respond: Given the legitimate concerns raised about UV tanning beds causing skin cancer it seems perfectly reasonable to be worried about similar health dangers from the UV lights used to cure gel nail polish. (The UV radiation causes the polymers in the polish to “cross-link” which makes the polish harder and longer lasting.) We originally speculated that using sunscreen would protect your skin around the nail bed but that the nail polish it...

DTC genetic testing: Caveat Emptor
I met Cynthia in a van from the airport, headed to the annual meeting of Family Tree DNA (familytreedna.com), where I was to speak about genetic testing. A beautiful blonde who looked decades younger than her 60 years, she ’d led a painful life, with type 1 diabetes since childhood, just like her father, brother, and grandfather. The family, so they thought, was 100% European, mostly Polish. My talk did not go over well. Genetic testing companies and their customers do not like to hear that a geneticist thinks their tests should be regulated, for reasons of both privacy and accuracy.Cynthia, intrigued despite my warnings,...
