Seeking advice for Plastic Residency independent/integrated?
Hi all I'm an IMG, graduated in Aug, 2021. I don't need visa sponsorship. I'm aiming for plastic surgery! My profile looks like this as of now: USMLEs - STEP 1: would take it in March-April, 22. - STEP 2: Probably by July-Aug, 22. CV - US electives: 3 months of away/elective rotations at ONE private practice in the US (plastic surgery outpatient clinic). I worked as Surgical First Assistant (aka First Assist) as well. I only got one LoR from that... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What the heck happened with the urology match this year? Match rates of competitive specialties are scaring me and deterring me from them.
I was bored and decided to head over to r/medicalschool and I learned that the urology match rate was 65% this year?? Apparently plastic surgery is looking even scarier this year potentially because 400 people are applying for 185 spots. I'm interested in ortho and historically it's an 80% match rate. This is not really what I thought it would be like after getting into medical school. I was always told that getting into medical school would be the hardest part but it seems like I'm not... PDL vs BBL for rosacea
I have a close friend who has rosacea in her cheeks and can either get PDL by a dermatologist (I believe $450 a session or so) or go to the more local plastic surgeon who uses BBL. Can anyone provide any insight for me? Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Hard Time Finding Plastic Specific Research
MS-2 here. I only have 1 first-author publication in plastics and another presentation. I have 3 other research experiences in other fields. People on here make it seem like you need to have 10+ plastic research publications to match integrated plastics though. I have a home program but we are not a very research-heavy institution. I have emailed more than 25 outside institution program directors to no avail. How do people get connected? I am very interested in an academic career and... 2021-2022 independent plastic surgery match
As in previous years, this thread is for interview updates and information for the 2021-22 PRS Independent Match. Seems like it has been helpful. Post interviews as they come in the following format as done in previous years: Program (date offered): interview dates offered (i.e. State University (11/2): 1/2, 2/4). Aside from tracking interviews, post questions that come up along the virtual trail. For independent match only. Not for integrated Good luck, everyone! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

2022 Plastic Surgery Independent Residency - for 2023 positions
This is a thread for current surgery residents who are going through the application/interview/match process for Independent Plastic Surgery 2022-2023. The Match will be in May 2022, with positions starting July 2023. This is not for current medical students who are applying for integrated plastic surgery programs. This is the place to let everyone else know when interview requests have been sent out, ask questions about the process, or ask about various programs. This can also be a place... Good career move or burning a bridge
I currently work for a plastic surgeon's office as a medical receptionist. I live at home and originally took this job as a less-exposed way to be involved in medicine during mid-COVID with the intent to transition to a clinical role as a medical assistant. The transition has been in discussion and I did intermittently begin to work in the role starting in MAY. But with difficulty finding someone to replace my receptionist role, there have been less and less times where I am working as a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

aesthetics medicine - residency - anesthesiology ?
Which types of residencies allow for physicians to make the transition to aesthetics medicine, such as Med Spas and such? I know plastic surgery definitely has the potential for such a transition, but I am not the most excited about a surgery residency. Dermatology is another potential residency option. I've heard people say anesthesiology as a residency allows for a switch to aesthetics medicine - thoughts? Any other residencies? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

MS1 interested in plastics but no home program
Hi! I am currently a M1 and interested in plastics. My institution only has 1 board certified plastic surgeon (no program) who does not do much research–if any at all. ENT at my school is huge and is in charge of almost all facial plastics and other plastic related surgeries. I know I'm thinking about this a little early, but I'm concerned about specialty specific research and not having a mentor for residency applications. Do you think I should reach out to the plastic surgeon and try to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Wanted Dermatology, but it's out of reach. What is the best alternative for me?
Hey I've finished medical school in a European country. I can basically choose any speciality other than Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Plastic Surgery. The only problem is that for the past few years I was absolutely dead set on Dermatology and, honestly, there was no other speciality that I enjoyed as much as Derm during my rotations. I would love if anyone could give me some feedback on specialities that might be a fit for me but I'm missing. I'm proceeding to explaining what I love... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Breast reduction for back pain?
Greetings from the Pain Management world. I've been getting this question from patients a lot recently. Some of my patients with chronic upper back pain request referrals for breast reductions in hope of improving their pain. I was always taught(and tell patients) that it often doesn't help, but I was curious what the plastics literature might show since it still seems to be performed somewhat frequently. I would love to be able to give patients actual data so they can make informed... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is oncology a 'sexy' specialty?
Some friends and I were discussing which specialty would be considered the 'sexiest' to prospective (female) mates. It was just a fun thought exercise, we have absolutely zero intention of using this to guide our decision-making. We were throwing around some 'classic' ones like neurosurg, plastic surgery, ER. I mentioned that I thought oncology was, because you're looked at as a smart, sensitive hero as you are dealing with cancer patients, and there isn't the ambiguity of what you're...
