Simulation training for clinicians returning to practice.
Abstract Many doctors take time out of clinical practice, and then have decreased confidence and poor performance ratings on their return. Simulation training provides a safe and effective learning platform for healthcare professionals to become immersed in realistic scenarios that provide an opportunity to develop technical and non-technical skills. A standardised, 1-day, multi-fidelity, interprofessional, simulation training course was developed and delivered at four sites, focusing on human factors, patient safety and acute clinical scenarios relevant for clinicians returning to practice in internal med...

The Association of Executive Functioning With Academic, Behavior, and Social Performance Ratings in Children With ADHD.
This study investigated the association of a performance-based measure of executive functioning (EF) with academic, social, and behavioral performance ratings in a convenience sample of 153 children aged 5 to 12 (78% male, 83% Caucasian) diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Multivariate regression showed that above and beyond age and ADHD severity, poorer EF performance was uniquely associated with more impairment in reading, written expression, and math by teacher report, and more impairment in the overall school and reading domains by parent report. ADHD symptoms were more strongly associated w...

Subjective Evaluation of Performance in a Collaborative Task Is Better Predicted From Autonomic Response Than From True Achievements
Whereas the fundamental role of the body in social cognition seems to be generally accepted, elucidating the bodily mechanisms associated with non-verbal communication and cooperation between two or more persons is still a challenging endeavor. In this article we propose a fresh approach for investigating the function of the autonomic nervous system that is reflected in parameters of heart rate variability, respiration, and electrodermal activity in a social setting. We analyzed autonomic parameters of dyads solving a target-tracking task together with the partner or individually. A machine classifier was trained to predic...

Hygiene Performance Rating – an auditing scheme for evaluation of slaughter hygiene
Publication date: Available online 20 February 2020Source: MethodsXAuthor(s): O.J. Røtterud, G.E.N. Gravning, S.J. Hauge, O. AlvseikeAbstractThe Hygiene Performance Rating scheme is developed by Animalia in Norway. This unique auditing tool for assessment of slaughter hygiene has been used in Norwegian abattoirs for the last 10 years. The Hygiene Performance Rating scheme visually evaluates and documents each operation on the slaughter line, assessing the factors that can affect the slaughter hygiene. The protocol is based on a systematic evaluation of general hygienic practices of each operation, such as the operators’...

Political skill camouflages Machiavellianism: Career role performance and organizational misbehavior at short and long tenure
Publication date: Available online 14 February 2020Source: Journal of Vocational BehaviorAuthor(s): Gerhard Blickle, Bastian Kückelhaus, Iris Kranefeld, Nora Schütte, Hanna A. Genau, Andreas Wihler, Dominic Gansen-AmmannAbstractOn the basis of socioanalytic theory (Hogan & Shelton, 1998) and mimicry-deception theory (Jones, 2014), we hypothesized that political skill would effectively mask Machiavellianism (socioanalytic theory) with consequences for coworker perceived career role performance and actual counterproductive work behavior at low and high levels of job tenure (mimicry-deception theory). We tested our hypothes...

Effect of Daily Teacher Feedback on Subsequent Motivation and Mental Health Outcomes in Fifth Grade Students: a Person-Centered Analysis
AbstractPrevention scientists recognize that implementing effective prevention practices and programs responsive to the needs of individuals but based solely upon the findings from variable-centered methods presents several limitations due to numerous risk factors, pathways, and unobserved influences. One such understudied influence that is masked by variable-centered methods, motivation, is a person-level characteristic that influences treatment outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the use of an alternative person-centered approach, group iterative multiple model estimation (GIMME), to model change over t...

A video anchored rating scale leads to high inter-rater reliability of inexperienced and expert raters in the absence of rater training
Our objective was to assess the impact of incorporating videos in a behaviorally anchored performance rating scale on the inter-rater reliability (IRR) of expert, intermediate and novice raters. (Source: American Journal of Surgery)

Why dark personalities can get ahead: Extending the toxic career model
Publication date: 1 April 2020Source: Personality and Individual Differences, Volume 156Author(s): Mareike Kholin, Bastian Kückelhaus, Gerhard BlickleAbstractLow honesty-humility is a broad indicator of the common core of dark personality traits. The toxic career model explains how dark personalities successfully climb the organizational ladder. It suggests that dark personalities can get ahead at work via self- and other-rated political skill, which results in improved job performance ratings by supervisors. We extended this mediation model by adding targets’ hierarchical organizational position. Additionally, we speci...

Inter-individual Differences in Intra-individual Variability in Personality Within and Across Contexts
This study focuses on intra-individual variability in personality at work, and how it relates tojob performance. 288 professionals completed contextualised adjective-based personality assessments in work and non-work contexts, and a non-contextualised personality measure. Ratings of their personality were also obtained from colleagues, family members and friends. Supervisors provided performance ratings for 130 participants. Results indicate that personality is context- and source-dependent, and varies systematically within contexts intra-individually regardless of source. Whilst this variability was predictive of some per...

Using Communication Strategies to Support Engagement, Performance, and Outcomes in Hospitals
Engaged employees are necessary to the success of any organization. While hospitals routinely conduct employee engagement surveys, there are opportunities to improve how they communicate, engage and build trust with their workforce. Studies indicate engaged workers receive up to 25-per-cent higher job performance ratings (source), and are more likely to receive promotions, while employers benefit from higher performing staff, lower turnover, absenteeism and fewer worker and patient safety incidents (Gallup study).
