Wheat Belly Pumpkin Pie
Well, the holidays roll around once again . . . and it’s time for everything pumpkin! Here is a reminder of how us grain-free folk make a wonderful and delicious pumpkin pie that is wheat- and grain-free. Without grains, it does NOT stimulate appetite, does NOT send blood sugar sky-high, does NOT add to arthritis/joint pain, acid reflux, irritable bowel symptoms, leg edema, depression, moodiness, migraine headache, hypertension, dementia, heart disease, or cancer. You can just have your nice big slice of pumpkin pie, even with a big dollop of whipped cream, all without worries. The pumpkin puree poses only a slight p...

Wheat Belly: Quick and Dirty #3
In view of the many new readers on the Wheat Belly Blog, many of whom have not yet had an opportunity to read the book but are eager to get started, here is the most recently updated Wheat Belly Quick & Dirty summary. It summarizes the essential dietary strategies of the Wheat Belly approach to 1) avoid all products made from high-yield, semi-dwarf wheat that wreak health destruction along with all other grains, and 2) create a diet that is otherwise healthy and appropriate for all members of the family. In particular, I’ve tried to clarify some items that were unclear in previous versions. This is the lifestyle ...

Eating the Same Foods Repeatedly Is Stupid
Do you have a tendency to eat the same foods over and over? Are you aware that it’s much better for your overall health, mental functioning, and immunity to take in a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, greens, nuts, and seeds? Eating the same limited foods repeatedly increases the chance that you’ll miss out on certain micronutrients, including many that haven’t been identified or studied yet. A nutritionally restricted diet also increases your susceptibility to disease. Our forager ancestors moved around a lot and ate nutritionally different wild foods wherever they went. With the rise of agriculture, h...

A man halfway between worlds
Alfred is 95 years old, and sits quietly in his wheelchair, rocking back and forth.  His strength is gone, and his veins and tendons bulge through fair, translucent skin, stretched over muscles of long lost size and use.  His greatest foe is gravity, which holds his lithe, bird-like form in the chair enough to cause sores on his hips, but only barely.  It looks as if he might float away. He remembers little, but smiles often.  And his simple joys are coffee and sweets, pecan pie, banana pudding, chocolate cake  These things, these beautiful, delicious gifts anchor pull him into in reality, and out of the reverie w...

Getting Back On Track
This morning I actually feel rested. Actually I felt pretty rested yesterday morning as well. But my day got hijacked and I ended up spending several hours with my father taking him to a doctor appointment (broken second metatarsal in his left foot at age 88) and then x-rays, back to the doctor, and then home. And then home to our house. I was totally exhausted by the time I got home at 430.But then I slept for close to 9 hours without waking up. So this morning I will go to the gym, then get my hair cut, and go to the library. Then I will stay home and finish what I never got to yesterday. I need to get back on track.What...

"An abandoned boat in front of the home of Marq Naquin and Ochxia Naquin, who live on Isle de Jean Charles in Louisiana. For over a century, American Indians on the island fished, hunted, trapped and farmed among the lush banana and pecan trees that once covered acres. But since 1955, more than 90% of the island's original land mass has washed away. Because of the impacts of #climatechange, a $48 million federal grant has been allocated to resettle the island's residents. The location of the new community has yet to be chosen, and moving is voluntary. Marq and Ochxia say they plan to stay — and they aren't alone. Attachm...
