Peanut Butter Cup Cookies
Here’s a recipe from my new book, Undoctored: Why Health Care Has Failed You and How You Can Become Smarter Than Your Doctor. Undoctored carries on the Wheat Belly tradition of providing recipes that allow you to indulge without paying a health or weight price. I learned long ago that asking people simply to eat real, whole foods like meats and vegetables quickly backfired. Someone would be doing great, for example, until Thanksgiving rolled around, and they’d return 14 pounds heavier, inflamed, with disastrous labs (sky-high small LDL, increased insulin and blood sugars, etc.)–a metabolic mess–from...

New guidelines for preventing peanut allergy in babies
Follow me on Twitter @drClaire In 2015, a study showed that giving peanut products to babies could help prevent peanut allergy. This was exciting news, given that 1-2% of children suffer from peanut allergy, an allergy that can not only be life-threatening but last a lifetime, unlike other food allergies that often improve as children get older. This is a change for pediatricians and parents, who traditionally have thought that peanut products shouldn’t be given until children are a bit older. It’s also tricky in that babies can choke on peanuts and peanut butter. And to make it even trickier, the study cautioned that ...

New Clinical Guidelines to Prevent Peanut Allergy
An expert panel sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, issued clinical guidelines to aid health care providers in early introduction of peanut-containing foods to infants to prevent the development of peanut allergy. Development of the Addendum Guidelines was prompted by emerging data suggesting that peanut allergy can be prevented by the early introduction of peanut-containing foods. The addendum provides three separate guidelines for infants at various levels of risk for developing peanut allergy and is targeted to a wide variety of heal...

Changes in the Price of Insulin, In Graphics!
In September 2016, the media was flooded with stories about the rediculously expensive price of EpiPens, which is basically epinephrine used to treat severe allergies (such as when some people get stung by bees or encounter peanuts), as the pens cost more than $600 for a package of two. The news was that the price of EpiPens had skyrocketed, which is a generic drug with an innovative delivery device that enables even people unfamiliar with doing so to give an epinephrine injection in order to rapidly address allergic reactions. Prices for the devices had increased by 600% over the past decade. Suddenly, ever...

Skin Patch Helps Control Peanut Allergies in Year-Long Study
The National Institutes of Health is touting results of a study it sponsored investigating a skin patch designed to treat peanut allergy. The device, called Viaskin Peanut, was developed by DBV Technologies, a company based in the suburbs of Paris, France. It delivers a small amount of peanut protein through the skin, training the immune system to deal with the allergen so that it can handle accidental eating of peanut-based products in the future. The results come from a year of following three groups of volunteers that are allergic to peanuts. One group received a placebo, while two other groups received 100 and 250 micr...

Letter to my patient
These 'letters' were passed to me by colleagues. I guess I work with alot of...frustrated docs. (these were not written by me)Dear Patient:You came in at 11pm last night with a chief complaint of sore throat while munching on a sandwich at triage. Next time you choose a sandwich to bring with you to the ED, try something that will go down easier. Peanut butter and Jelly – while I’m sure was very tasty, made my ENT exam, well… a bit difficult. But alas, we did get through it and I got to see your very normal throat. While I was tempted to leave the diagnosis of “no real complaint” on your chart, after envisioning ...

Mom ’s Diet while Breastfeeding
Mom’s diet while breastfeeding can change the composition of her breast milk. It’s no wonder nursing mothers have questions about what they should and shouldn’t eat. Here’s a quick overview of the most commonly asked questions about mom’s diet while breastfeeding. How Many Calories Do Mom’s Need while Breastfeeding? One rule of thumb is to take in about (15 x your current weight) + 500 calories a day. So for a woman who weighs 125 pounds, this would be about 2375 calories a day. But this is just a rule of thumb. Choosing healthy foods, following your appetite, and paying attention to you...

Beyond SGR: Aligning The Peanut Butter Of Payment Reform With The Jelly Of Consumer Engagement
Increasingly, payment reform initiatives aim to achieve greater value from the provision of health care services.  The emphasis on alternative payment models in the recent bipartisan, legislation reforming Medicare’s sustainable growth rate (SGR) physician payment mechanism highlights this momentum. This shift toward value-based payment offers a significant opportunity for plans, clinicians, employers, policy makers, and other health system participants to better align provider and consumer incentives.  When synchronized, quality-driven payment reform and person-centered engagement blend together as naturally as peanu...

Preventing peanut allergies.  What does the recent data mean?
Peanut allergy is a worldwide concern, but especially in Western countries, in which prevalence has doubled in the last ten years, to a rate of 1.4 to 3.0 percent of children.  To prevent the development of peanut allergy, national guidelines have attempted to keep pace with this crisis, with recommendations, at first, of delayed exposure to peanut and, more recently, of earlier exposure.  But a universally accepted and research-supported approach to the prevention of peanut allergy remains elusive. Does peanut oil enlarge breasts?
Annette asks…I have heard that peanut oil can make breasts bigger as a result of cutaneous hypernutrition. The are people who says that the only effect is the oil moisturizes the area making it seem bigger. What is the real effect of peanut oil? The Beauty Brains reply I recently received a question about breast pimples and now this. It must be “Booby Brains” week. Nutty theory We can’t find ANY references to peanut oil working in the way that you described. The idea doesn’t even make sense from a basic skin biology perspective – we don’t know of any mechanism for a topically applied oil impacting the metabo...
