Going Nuts for Peanuts
This study, "Acute and second-meal effects of peanuts on glycemic response and appetite in obese women with high type 2 diabetes risk: a randomized cross-over clinical trial," was conducted jointly by Purdue University and the Federal University of Vicosa in Brazil. Such a long-distance collaboration couldn't have happened just a few years ago. It was published in the June 2013 edition of the British Journal of Nutrition. The study not only showed reduced blood glucose levels, but also reduced appetite and food consumption for most of the day in people who ate peanuts or peanut butter. This was based on levels of satiety (...

The Peanut Butter Toast Incident
WCK has always been very advanced, dentally, and she's already ready for orthodontic work. She got an expander put in the top of her mouth a couple of weeks ago. Here she is, super thrilled  a) to be at the orthodontist in the first place and b) to be having her picture taken:I was worried the expander would hurt. Fortunately, it doesn't. Instead, the expander traps food. For the first week or so, this really freaked out WCK. Jay was on a business trip when she got the thing put in, so he missed the first day or two of Dramatic Removal of Trapped Food. His introduction to the expander happened early one morning when w...

Lots of news to spread today! Buckle up for some bullet points. Are you near the Washington, D.C. area (Crystal City, VA, specifically)? Come to the CWD Focus on Technology regional conference and expo happening next weekend, February 1-3, 2013. Sebastien Sasseville is the keynote speaker, and this dude is a total badass. It also sounds like a handful of DOC locals will be getting together for dinner on Saturday night. I’d love for you to join us! Ronen Kei...

Confessions.*
There are a few things that many EM docs don't openly discuss 'else they subject themselves to criticism and judgment. Here are few of my confessions -I think leaving acute patients to 'see quickies' in an attempt to clear out the waiting room contradicts the very essence of emergency medicine...and I don't do it.In every emergency department there is (supposed to be) some sort of triage process. Where sick people are seen first, and not-so-sick people...wait. Well, our nursing staff (as wonderful as they are), will frequently ask me if I would 'come out and see some of the quickie, non-sick people, to clear out the waitin...
