4 tips for better communication with patients
Although my medical school created many opportunities for clinical exposure during the first two years, none of it compared to the immersive experiences that were to follow. Textbooks, PowerPoints, and lectures galore were supplanted by hundreds of patient interactions in my rotation months. Here are four patient communication tips that have served me well, and that I wish I knew from the outset of my rotations. 1. Build rapport with the first question itself. I discovered early on that, more often than not, the prompt, “How’s it going?” got me some variation of the perfunctory “good,” “fine” or “alright”...

Do You Get Enough Face Time With Your Patients?
Strong patient communication is a priority for most radiologists, yet many find this goal to be squandered by bureaucratic expectations and technological demands. In a new survey from the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), around three-quarters of participating radiologists felt that timeconstraints and imaging responsibilities deter them from direct patient communication. The survey included 694 participating RSNA members, 611 of whom agreed that “promoting awareness of radiology’s role in patients’ overall health care is important to how they practice.” However, despite the overwhelming motivation to...

Video Interpretation for Patients With Hearing Loss
In health care settings, effective communication is vital. Miscommunication during diagnoses or post-discharge treatment plans can lead to serious consequences. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires hospitals to provide effective communication means for patients, families and hospital visitors. Fortunately, technology advances mean hospitals can offer patients and their families video remote interpreting (VRI). VRI allows patients to communicate with audiologists, speech-language pathologists, doctors, nurses and other health care professionals in their native or preferred language—including various forms of...

Do Radiologists Walk the Talk?
There ’s a disparity between radiologists’ commitment to providing strong patient care, and the number of patients who feel they’re receiving adequate attention. Although many radiologists want to maintain an open rapport with their patients, an overwhelming workload often hinders them from engaging in high level communication with their clients. A newsurveypublished in Radiology found that there ’s a great disconnect in the campaign to promote patient care values, and what is actually being practiced. The study ’s lead author, Jennifer L. Kemp, MD, and her team surveyed 694 members of the Radiological Society of ...

The law against giving cuts in the healthcare system
I'm very pleased that the Maharashtra government is passing a law which makes the payment of cuts, kickbacks, and commissions to doctors an offense for which they can be punished. I've always been vocal about the fact that kickbacks have corrupted the medical profession and damaged the doctor-patient relationship. These cuts impose a burden on the honest doctors who refuse to give kickbacks ; and helps bad doctors who are willing to take shortcuts to enrich themselves. In the long run, it hurts patients as well , because the cost is passed on to them, and they end up paying for these under the table bribes.A practise which...

This Intervention Helps Underserved Women Access Needed Postpartum Care
Pregnancy and childbirth can exacerbate many health risks, especially among underserved women or those who have a hard time getting health care. Diabetes, hypertension, and depression are all serious health conditions that occur frequently during pregnancy and childbirth, and are more common (during pregnancy and overall) among racial and ethnic minority women. Many women with these conditions have worsened health throughout their life course. Yet pregnancy and the postpartum period also present an opportunity for providers to intervene and improve the health trajectories of these women by connecting them to health care, h...

Winning the Doctor Lottery
By ANISH KOKA, MD A poignant piece recently appeared in the journal Health Affairs and was rapidly devoured on social media by the health policy community. The story is a harrowing first person account of a woman’s multiple interactions with doctors. The doctors in the story are either very good or very bad. One pediatrician turns the author and her sick son away on three consecutive days with colic, only to have a more careful partner sound the alarm and discover pyloric stenosis. The author then recounts the tale of her father’s death at age 42 due to a surgeon who operated for diverticulitis unnecessarily. ...
