Benign breast disease found on percutaneous biopsy ups cancer risk
Benign breast disease diagnosed through percutaneous biopsy increases the overall risk of developing breast cancer, according to research published December 13 in JAMA Surgery.  A team led by Dr. Mark Sherman from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, found that presence of the disease on percutaneous biopsy is tied to a similar degree of increased breast cancer risk compared with surgically diagnosed benign breast disease. It also reported that the risks of both invasive breast cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) remained elevated among patients with the disease compared with the general population. “The finding...

Cambridge Researchers in UK Develop ‘Unknome Database’ That Ranks Proteins by How Little is Known about Their Functions
Scientists believe useful new clinical laboratory assays could be developed by better understanding the huge number of ‘poorly researched’ genes and the proteins they build Researchers have added a new “-ome” to the long list of -omes. The new -ome is the “unknome.” This is significant for clinical laboratory managers because it is part of […] The post Cambridge Researchers in UK Develop ‘Unknome Database’ That Ranks Proteins by How Little is Known about Their Functions appeared first on Dark Daily. PET/MRI reveals separate Alzheimer ’s biomarkers in single scan
A PET radiotracer for diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease may also be used to measure vascular brain changes in patients during PET/MRI scans, according to a study published December 7 in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine. The finding suggests that hybrid PET/MRI can provide a more comprehensive picture of brain pathology involved in cognitive decline, noted first author Ates Fettahoglu, an undergraduate researcher at Stanford University in Stanford, CA, and colleagues. “Two important biomarkers may be measured in a single session in participants with memory concerns, enabling improved characterization of dementia pathophys...

Pneumonia on CT? Consider additional imaging so as not to miss cancer
Organizing pneumonia can hide underlying lung cancers in up to 10% of cases, and repeat imaging in the form of PET/CT -- and additional biopsy -- should be considered in patients with high clinical suspicion of malignancy, researchers have reported. Suspicion of malignancy may be prompted by avid uptake of the radiopharmaceutical FDG on PET/CT imaging, according to study results delivered on November 27 at the RSNA meeting. But it can be tricky to catch potential cancers once organizing pneumonia has been diagnosed, said presenter Charissa Kim, MD, PhD, of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in New York City. "Accurate ...

Complexity of radiology exams has skyrocketed
The complexity of radiology exams should be considered a driving force over numbers of exams when estimating radiology workloads, according to research presented November 29 at RSNA 2023 in Chicago. In a study at a tertiary imaging center in Sweden, investigators found that the data in CT and MRI studies for radiologists to interpret increased up to six times between 2009 and 2022, while the numbers of exams “only doubled,” said Tomas Bjerner, MD, PhD, of Linkoping University. “This resulted in an increase in the workload for reading radiologists that is higher than when only the number of studies is considered,”...
