Development with No Political Framework Is a Car Without an Engine
Differing historical narratives, asymmetry of power, security concerns, upheaval in the larger region, poverty, and religious differences all make Israel-Palestine one of the world ' s most intractable conflicts. An early-summer meeting in Bahrain served as a sales session of sorts for the economic half of the Trump administration ' s proposal to solve it. (Source: The RAND Blog)

What Has A.I. In Medicine Ever Done For Us? At Least 45 Things!
Remember Monty Python’s brilliant Life of Brian movie scene where the Palestinian insurgent commando, planning the abduction of Pilate’s wife in return for all the horrors they had to endure from the Roman Empire, asks the rhetorical question: what have the Romans ever done for us? With the hype and overmarketing, not to speak about the fears around A.I, we asked the same question. What has A.I. in medicine ever done for us? Well, we found at least 45 things. I have 45 responses to the pressing question on everyone’s mind who is interested in healthcare but tired of the hype or the doomsday scenarios around A.I.: ...

What Can Brain Imaging Tell Us About Violent Extremism?
In this study,Sacred Values included:Palestinian right of returnWestern military forces being expelled from all Muslim landsStrict sharia as the rule of law in all Muslim countriesArmed jihad being waged against enemies of MuslimsForbidding of caricatures of Prophet MohammedVeiling of women in publicWhat were theNonsacred Values? We don ' t know. I couldn ' t find examples anywhere in the paper. It ' s crucial that we know what these were, to help understand the “sacralization” of nonsacred values, which was observed in an fMRI experiment (described later). So I turned to the Supplemental Material ofBerns et al. (2012)...

Does the Migrant Caravan Pose a Serious Terrorism Risk?
Yesterday, President Trumptweeted that “unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in” with themigrant caravan approaching the U.S. border. Vice President Pencelater tried to justify President Trump ’s comment by arguing that, “It is inconvincible that there are not people of Middle Eastern descent in a crowd of more than 7,000 people advancing toward our border.” Todd Bensman of the Center for Immigration Studieswrote that  “the president was obviously referencing … ‘special interest aliens’ … U.S.-bound migrants moving along well-established Latin America smuggling routes from [Muslim] countries.” Perhaps...

International Palliative Care Education - EPEC-Peds
By Stacy S. Remke (@StacyRemke)In about 2004, our program embarked on a regional pilot project to teach healthcare workers – doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and others – to provide pediatric palliative care. Our region is the Upper Midwest: Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota. “Join pediatric palliative care,” we joked, “and see the world!!”Little did we know. From these first steps began a truly humbling and inspiring journey across many continents and into many communities.Much of this started when a project I was involved with –Education in Palliative and End of Life Care for Pedi...

Why Hillarycare failed …and what we need to learn from that failure
By MATTHEW HOLT In July 2005 George W Bush had relatively recently won a Presidential election in which the Republican won the popular vote (something that will likely never happen again) & the Republicans controlled all three branches of Government. Those of us liberals at the bottom of a dark trench were wondering if and how we’d get to health reform. So in another reprint to celebrate THCB’s 15th birthday, here was my then take on what went wrong in 1994 and what would happen next–Matthew Holt      There are lots of versions about what killed the 1993-4 health care reform effort.  Hillary C...

Leishmaniasis in Palestine
In the following charts, I’ve compared reported incidence rates for cutaneous leishmaniasis in the two states which comprise Palestine.  Note that disease rates in  a third area (Gaza / West Bank) are two- to three-fold those reported by Israel and Jordan.  Significantly, current rates in Syria (per 100,000) are approximately one hundred-fold those of Israel (280 vs. 3 in 2016) [1,2]   References: Berger S. Cutaneous and Mucosal Leishmaniasis: Global Status, 2018. 166 pages , 111 graphs , 1,681 references. U.S. Withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council: Right Decision, Bad Optics
Confirming rumors that had been circulating for weeks, the Trump administration announced that the United States will withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council. That body consists of 47 member states with rotating, staggered 3-year terms. It is tasked with protecting human rights as well as highlighting and condemning regimes that violate those rights. The Council has been controversial since its inception, especially among American conservatives. George W. Bush ’s administration declined to make the United States a member when the UN General Assembly established the Council in 2006. President Obama reversed that decisio...

Five Thoughts on Jerusalem, Gaza, and What's in Between
Dozens of people have been killed and over 2,000 injured in protests in the Gaza Strip along the border with Israel. Continued clashes are expected until the fundamental problems of the strip are solved, including the governance vacuum, the Palestinian Authority-Hamas rift, and the conflict with Israel. Sunday Sermonette: Ill-gotten Gains
Genesis 13:So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him.2 Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold.Yeah, which he got by pimping out his wife to Pharaoh.  3 From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier4 and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of theLord.5 Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.6 But the land could not support them while they stayed toge...

Profiles of Every Terrorism Vetting Failure in the Last 30 Years
In my newpolicy analysis released today, I identify 65 vetting failures where the visa vetting system allowed a foreign-born person to enter the United States as an adult or older teenager when they had already radicalized —80 percent occurred before 9/11. Just 13 vetting failures have occurred since 9/11, and only one—the last one (Tashfeen Malik)—resulted in any deaths in the United States. That’s one vetting failure for every 29 million visa or status approvals, and one deadly failure for every 379 million visa or status approvals from 2002 to 2016.As I note, 9/11 is reasonable point of analysis because after th...

Sunday Sermonette: Moral Philosophy
Okay, here ' s the rest of Genesis 9. In case you thought it couldn ' t get any weirder . . .18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.)19 These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the whole earth. We will once again ignore the implied incest, which was previously required of the children of Cain and Seth. 20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard.21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent.22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his fathe...
