Assessing the risk of exposure to antimicrobial resistance at public beaches: Genome-based insights into the resistomes, mobilomes and virulomes of beta-lactams resistant Enterobacteriaceae from recreational beaches in Lagos, Nigeria
Int J Hyg Environ Health. 2024 Mar 15;258:114347. doi: 10.1016/j.ijheh.2024.114347. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe role of recreational water use in the acquisition and transmission of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is under-explored in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We used whole genome sequence analysis to provide insights into the resistomes, mobilomes and virulomes of 14 beta-lactams resistant Enterobacterales isolated from water and wet-sand at four recreational beaches in Lagos, Nigeria. Carriage of multiple beta-lactamase genes was detected in all isolates except two, including six isolates carrying bl...

Identification of novel laccase from cyanobacterium Microcystis flos-aquae and enhanced azo dye bioremediation potential
This study introduces a cost-effective, enzyme-mediated bioremediation alternative using a novel laccase from the cyanobacteriumMicrocystis flos-aquae. This purified enzyme yielded 0.55 % (w/w)with significant activity at 40 °C and pH 4.00. Kinetic studies showed the dependence of M. flos-aquae laccase on Cu2+and its inhibition by EDTA and Fe2+. The efficacy of the enzyme was demonstrated through rapid decolorization of the azo dye Cibacron Brilliant Blue over a wide temperature and pH range. As this enzyme effectively decolorizes dyes across a broad temperature and pH range, it offers a promising solution for bioremediat...

In-hospital psychoeducation for family caregivers of Nigerian children with cancer (The RESCUE Study)
This study aimed to determine the impact of a structured psychoeducation program on caregivers' outcomes relating to preparedness to provide care, burden of caregiving, and quality of life (QoL).METHODS: This quasi-experimental (pre-and-posttest) design, involved family caregivers of children on admission for cancer treatment in 4 Nigerian tertiary hospitals. Eligible participants received 2 structured, psychoeducational training sessions delivered by a multidisciplinary oncology team, focusing on the management of patients' condition, spiritual care, self-care, and support.RESULTS: Subjects were mainly female (79.5%) and ...

Socio-economic baseline for oil-impacted communities in Ogoniland: towards a restoration framework in Niger Delta, Nigeria
This study documents the socio-economic baselines in selected oil-impacted communities prior to the commencement of the Ogoni clean-up and restoration project. Adopting mixed approach consisting of semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), key informant interviews (KIIs), and household surveys, we surveyed the pre-remediation socio-economic conditions in the Ogoniland communities between July 2018 and March 2019. Results indicated that almost all respondents (99.6%) agreed that the smell of petroleum products or crude oil was evident in the air they breathed even as there were visible black particles (soo...
