An emerging zoonosis: molecular detection of multidrug-methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus from butchers ’ knives, livestock products and contact surfaces
This study aimed to investigate the occurrence, molecular detection, and antibiogram of the MRSA strain in fresh beef, contact surfaces, and butchers ’ knives from the four major abattoirs (Karu, Gwagwalada, Deidei, and Kubwa) located in the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling technique was used to collect 400 swab samples from butchers’ knives (132), fresh beef (136), and contact surfaces (132). Presumptive colonies on mannitol salt agar were subjected to culture, isolation, and biotyping. The antibiogram was carried out via a Kirby-Bauer disk containing eight antibiotics. MRSA was phenotypicall...

Preferences in adolescents and young people ’s sexual and reproductive health services in Nigeria: a discrete choice experiment
ConclusionThe pattern of preferences identified are potential targets for service design and delivery optimization that may result in improvements in service acceptability and utilization. These results strengthen the call for involving AYP in decision-making in health interventions for them and developing context-specific SRH programs for AYP in public health facilities. The influence of health service interactions and local policies on vaccination decision-making in immigrant women: A multi-site Canadian qualitative study
CONCLUSION: Given our participants' different communication preferences and needs, we argue that a one-size-fits-all communication approach is inappropriate for immigrant and refugee populations. Instead, multi-pronged communication strategies are required to reach participants and respond to previous experiences and information that may lead to vaccination hesitancy.PMID:38514354 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.03.014 (Source: Vaccine)

Endometriosis-associated massive ascites in a young Nigerian lady
We report a 31-year-old nulligravida with progressive abdominal swelling, worsening dysmenorrhea, weight loss and a family history of ovarian tumour. Pelvic ultrasonography and Computed Tomography scans suggested an ovarian mass suspected to be an ovarian malignancy. Exploratory laparotomy revealed massive haemorrhagic ascites (8.6 litre) and multiple nodular masses on the anterior abdominal wall, omentum, bowel and pelvic organs, which were biopsied and confirmed on histopathology to be endometriosis. She had drainage of ascites and hormonal suppression using progestogen (Medroxyprogesterone acetate) with no recurrence in...
