New technology, psychiatry, and the law: Panic, prudence, possibility
Int J Law Psychiatry. 2024 Mar 23;94:101984. doi: 10.1016/j.ijlp.2024.101984. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThroughout human history, all new technology has been met with surprise, anxiety, panic, and - eventually - prudent adoption of certain aspects of specific technological advances. This pattern is evident in the histories of most technologies, ranging from steam power in the nineteenth century, to television in the twentieth century, and - now - 'artificial intelligence' (AI) in the twenty-first century. Each generation believes that the technological advances of its era are quantitatively and qualitatively different ...

Immunohistochemical analysis of PDGFR- α for wound age determination
AbstractImmunohistochemical analysis of platelet-derived growth factor receptor- α (PDGFR-α) was performed on human skin wounds obtained from forensic autopsy cases. Thirty human skin wounds were collected at different post-infliction intervals as follows: Group I, 4 h to 3 days (n = 16); Group II, 4 to 7 days (n = 7); Group III, 9 to 10 days (n = 3); and Group IV, 14 to 20 days (n = 4). Immunopositive reactions for PDGFR-α were not observed in the uninjured human skin specimens. In a semi-quantitative morphometrical analysis, the number of PDGFR-α-positive cells was observed increased in Group II, wit...

New alginate-gelatine method for casting of staining inside firearm barrels
This study addresses this gap by searching for a suitable method to extract the traces within a casting. Using alginate or gelatine as suitable materials, the results were hampered by serious adhesion issues and their extraction out of the firearm barrel was impeded. Finally, the combination of 11% gelatine with 1% alginate, introduced into the barrel around a ‘central spine’, succeeded to consistently produce replicable castings. Experimental contact shots displayed a distinct staining gradient from the muzzle to the rear of the barrel, as revealed through endoscopy and proved in the macroscopic casting. The technique...

News at a glance: Geoengineering test canceled, Havana syndrome probed, and U.S. energy research chief departs
ASTRONOMY Plan to end NASA x-ray scope draws fire NASA Scientists are lobbying the U.S. Congress to reverse NASA’s plan to shut down the nearly 25-year-old Chandra X-ray Observatory. President Joe Biden’s budget request for the 2025 fiscal year, released last week, calls for slashing the space telescope’s budget to $41.1 million, a decline of 40% from the 2023 level, and additional cuts in following years. Half of Chandra’s 165-person staff could be laid off later this year. The telescope (illustrated) has fueled major discoveries about super...

'I was going into it blind': Nearest Relatives, legal literacy, and the Mental Health Act 1983
This article examines this issue through focussing on the experiences of Nearest Relatives, who are given rights and powers during Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA) assessments for compulsory admission in England and Wales. Interviews with nineteen Nearest Relatives in England were conducted and were thematically analysed. Three themes were identified. First, NRs spoke about their awareness and knowledge of the role. They predominantly reported negative experiences in which they received no or little information. They also reported that professionals assumed they possessed legal knowledge, and their legal knowledge was largely ...
