anatomyinmotionapp: A Few Kidney Facts 1. The kidneys have a higher blood flow than even the brain, liver or heart. 2. The kidneys reabsorb and redistribute 99% of the blood volume and only 0.1% of the blood filtered becomes urine. 3. Kidney stones are an accumulation of mineral salts and mostly combined with calcium which can lodge anywhere along the course of the urinary tract. 4. Refined carbohydrates and sugar help the body make kidney stones. 5. Sugar will stimulate the pancreas to release insulin. This causes extra calcium to be excreted in the urine… alas, kidney stones. 6. An excess of milk or antac...

The Barkers and The Colored Balloons
Today, while getting a root canal, I had a lot of time to think. A friend had told me to listen to music while it was going on, and so I brought my tunes along. I knew that would be risky because I am susceptible to music mush, where I hear a song and it takes me right back to a memory, kneading my heart like bread dough. But I have never been one to avoid certain emotional swamps, and so I went, because it would be better than watching bits of my tooth dust fly out of my mouth. I say I am an emotion explorer, but that is actually not always true. Sometimes I avoid like crazy, so much so that I turn to stupid destructive b...

sherpaa: Meet Dr. Joshua Schwimmer! Dr. Schwimmer is a nephrologist and internist practicing in the Upper East Side. He’s exactly the kind of specialist Sherpaa loves to work with. He’s got a remarkable personality, a highly analytical mind, a mission to make healthcare better, and he’s far more tech savvy than us. What’s your favorite thing about being a doctor? Helping people solve complicated problems and keeping them healthy is genuinely satisfying. Most people feel like they don’t really understand what the kidneys do — they’re the brains of the blood, the balancers of ...

Dash - blah, blah, blah
Blah, blah, blah. Dash. Again. do you know what Dash is? Its that boring diet that won again as the best overall diet. Its called Dash or - Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension. It was developed by the NIH. It also helps reduce cholesterol and the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and kidney stones. Blah, blah, blah.It focuses on limiting your sodium intake as well as the usual balanced plate of grains and fruit and vegetables. So hide the salt shaker and you will do fine. (I like the picture on CNN.com which shows a salad full of olives.)The thought of it makes my skin crawl. It was introduced to me by a doctor who told m...

Progress report
It's now been three and a half years since I was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and began my quest to cure myself. Although I have not achieved the dramatic recovery I was hoping for my condition appears to be generally stable and this can be considered an acheivement given that the tendency for CKD patients is to gradually lose kidney function until replacement or death becomes necessary. Here are my findings and tips to date so that others may benefit from them (none of which should be construed as medical advice!): Comments on this blogThanks to all the people who've taken the time to comment on th...

Update and reflections
Lab resultsCreatinineMy latest creatinine tests show no change at 2.1mg/dL. This level has remained constant since about january. UltrasoundAn ultrasound scan revealed: Three of my four kidney stones have disappeared (without specific treatment). This is a relief as it's something less to worry about. My first nephrologist had prescribed what I felt was an aggresive course of 3 different drugs to try and clear the stones, and I decided against taking them (I stopped consulting that nephrologist). The remaining stone is 6mm and apparently it's position is favorable for “passing” (although I wasn't a...
