Radium deposition in human brain tissue: A Geant4-DNA Monte Carlo toolkit study
Z Med Phys. 2024 Feb;34(1):166-174. doi: 10.1016/j.zemedi.2023.09.004. Epub 2023 Oct 28.ABSTRACTNASA has encouraged studies on 226Ra deposition in the human brain to investigate the effects of exposure to alpha particles with high linear energy transfer, which could mimic some of the exposure astronauts face during space travel. However, this approach was criticized, noting that radium is a bone-seeker and accumulates in the skull, which means that the radiation dose from alpha particles emitted by 226Ra would be heavily concentrated in areas close to cranial bones rather than uniformly distributed throughout the brain. In...

Towards quality management of artificial intelligence systems for medical applications
Z Med Phys. 2024 Feb 26:S0939-3889(24)00024-2. doi: 10.1016/j.zemedi.2024.02.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe use of artificial intelligence systems in clinical routine is still hampered by the necessity of a medical device certification and/or by the difficulty of implementing these systems in a clinic's quality management system. In this context, the key questions for a user are how to ensure robust model predictions and how to appraise the quality of a model's results on a regular basis. In this paper we discuss some conceptual foundation for a clinical implementation of a machine learning system and argue that bo...

Implementation and validation of 2-D-array based tests in routine linac quality assurance
CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that a low-resolution 2-D ionization chamber array could replace film dosimetry without having to sacrifice high test sensitivity. Its implementation in the routine clinical linac QA program may involve considerable QA time savings.PMID:38368240 | DOI:10.1016/j.zemedi.2024.01.006 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Medizinische Physik)

Application of NEMA protocols to verify GATE models based on the Digital Biograph Vision and the Biograph Vision Quadra scanners
CONCLUSIONS: The results of the simulations have provided evidence of a good agreement between the experimental data and the results obtained with GATE. Thus, this work supports the capability of this MC toolkit to accurately simulate the models of the Vision and Quadra scanners. This study has laid the basis for further research in this field and has identified several areas that could be explored.PMID:38341373 | DOI:10.1016/j.zemedi.2024.01.005 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Medizinische Physik)
