Comparison of different neurite density metrics with brain asymmetry evaluation
Z Med Phys. 2023 Aug 7:S0939-3889(23)00085-5. doi: 10.1016/j.zemedi.2023.07.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe standard diffusion MRI model with intra- and extra-axonal water pools offers a set of microstructural parameters describing brain white matter architecture. However, non-linearities in the standard model and diffusion data contamination by noise and imaging artefacts make estimation of diffusion metrics challenging. In order to develop reliable diffusion approaches and to avoid computational model degeneracy, additional theoretical assumptions allowing stable numerical implementations are required. Advanced di...

Feature-guided deep learning reduces signal loss and increases lesion CNR in diffusion-weighted imaging of the liver
CONCLUSION: Unlike the conventional algorithm, the deep-learning algorithm increased the vessel darkness. Therefore, it may be a viable alternative to conventional algorithms.PMID:37543450 | DOI:10.1016/j.zemedi.2023.07.005 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Medizinische Physik)

Towards MR contrast independent synthetic CT generation
Z Med Phys. 2023 Aug 1:S0939-3889(23)00083-1. doi: 10.1016/j.zemedi.2023.07.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe use of synthetic CT (sCT) in the radiotherapy workflow would reduce costs and scan time while removing the uncertainties around working with both MR and CT modalities. The performance of deep learning (DL) solutions for sCT generation is steadily increasing, however most proposed methods were trained and validated on private datasets of a single contrast from a single scanner. Such solutions might not perform equally well on other datasets, limiting their general usability and therefore value. Additionally, fu...

Moon, Mars and Minds: Evaluating Parkinson's disease mortality among U.S. radiation workers and veterans in the million person study of low-dose effects
CONCLUSIONS: Parkinson's disease was positively associated with radiation in the MPS cohorts indicating the need for careful evaluation as to causality in other studies, delineation of possible mechanisms, and assessing possible implications for space travel as well as radiation protection guidance for terrestrial workers.PMID:37537100 | DOI:10.1016/j.zemedi.2023.07.002 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Medizinische Physik)

Space agency-specific standards for crew dose and risk assessment of ionising radiation exposures for the International Space Station
Z Med Phys. 2023 Jul 26:S0939-3889(23)00082-X. doi: 10.1016/j.zemedi.2023.06.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Partner Agencies of the International Space Station (ISS) maintain separate career exposure limits and shared Flight Rules that control the ionising radiation exposures that crewmembers can experience due to ambient environments throughout their space missions. In low Earth orbit as well as further out in space, energetic ions referred to as galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) easily penetrate spacecraft and spacecraft contents and consequently are always present at low dose rates. Protons and electrons that are ...
