Automatic AI-based contouring of prostate MRI for online adaptive radiotherapy
CONCLUSION: In this study, an AI-based autocontouring was successfully trained for online adaptive MR-guided radiotherapy on the 1.5 T MR-Linac system. The developed model can automatically generate contours accepted by physicians (80%) or only with the need of minor corrections (16%) for the irradiation of primary prostate on the clinically employed sequences.PMID:37263911 | DOI:10.1016/j.zemedi.2023.05.001 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Medizinische Physik)

A modular system of flexible receive-only coil arrays for 3 T Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Z Med Phys. 2023 May 29:S0939-3889(23)00070-3. doi: 10.1016/j.zemedi.2023.05.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFlexible form-fitting radiofrequency coils provide high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and in array configuration large anatomical areas of interest can be covered. We propose a modular system - "ModFlex"- of flexible lightweight 4-channel coaxial coil arrays for 3 T MRI. We investigated the performance difference between commercial reference coils and 8- and 16-channel ModFlex receive-only array systems. In vivo, six anatomical targets in four regions of interest - the neck, th...

The ESA Active Dosimeter (EAD) system onboard the International Space Station (ISS)
Z Med Phys. 2023 May 22:S0939-3889(23)00038-7. doi: 10.1016/j.zemedi.2023.03.001. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIonizing radiation in general and mixed fields of space radiation in particular pose a risk of serious harm to human health. The risk of such adverse effects increases with the duration of the mission, and for all missions outside the protective properties of the Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere. Accordingly, radiation protection is of central importance for all human spaceflight, which is recognized by all international space agencies. To date various systems, analyze and determine the exposure to ionizing ...

Development of a PTV margin for preclinical irradiation of orthotopic pancreatic tumors derived from a well-known recipe for humans
Z Med Phys. 2023 May 22:S0939-3889(23)00042-9. doi: 10.1016/j.zemedi.2023.03.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn human radiotherapy a safety margin (PTV margin) is essential for successful irradiation and is usually part of clinical treatment planning. In preclinical radiotherapy research with small animals, most uncertainties and inaccuracies are present as well, but according to the literature a margin is used only scarcely. In addition, there is only little experience about the appropriate size of the margin, which should carefully be investigated and considered, since sparing of organs at risk or normal tissue is aff...

Wavelength-dependent error minimization for quantitative spectroscopic photoacoustic tomography with a ring-array system
CONCLUSIONS: Utilizing UST for model-based optical and acoustic compensation of PAT images was proposed by our group previously. In this work, we further demonstrated the efficacy of the developed algorithm in sPAT by minimizing the error caused by the tissue's optical heterogeneity on improving spectral unmixing, which is a major limiting factor in reliability of sPAT measurements. Such synergistic combination of UST and PAT provides a window of opportunity to achieve bias-free quantitative sPAT measurements, which plays an important role in future pre-clinical and clinical utility of PAT.PMID:37225605 | DOI:10.1016/j.zem...
