Characterization of physiochemical parameters & amp; their effect on microbial content of smokeless tobacco products marketed in north India
CONCLUSIONS: Studies to detect the presence of pathogenic microbiological genera as well as potentially toxic constituents are warranted. The use of SLTs as an alternative to cigarette smoking should be discouraged, and cessation programmes must call attention to their detrimental effects and emphasize on benefits of quitting SLT consumption.PMID:38088421 | DOI:10.4103/ijmr.ijmr_1467_22 (Source: The Indian Journal of Medical Research)

Tobacco exposure among antenatal women in India: Challenges in tobacco screening & amp; cessation counselling
Indian J Med Res. 2023 Dec 12. doi: 10.4103/ijmr.ijmr_188_23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLinks between tobacco use and poor pregnancy outcomes are well established. Despite various tobacco control measures taken by the government, nearly 5-8 per cent of pregnant women consume tobacco in India. Antenatal check-ups are an opportunity to assess and assist women in quitting tobacco during pregnancy. This review highlights the challenges faced in identifying pregnant tobacco users and providing cessation counselling to them in a formal healthcare setup in the Indian context. For this narrative review, open access databases l...

A descriptive study of hepatitis C in people who inject drugs
CONCLUSIONS: Undetected HCV infection is common in PWIDs; awareness and treatment uptake is poor in this group. Spatial clustering of infections in a district shows transmission in close networks and provides opportunities for targeted interventions.PMID:38084934 | DOI:10.4103/ijmr.ijmr_2634_22 (Source: The Indian Journal of Medical Research)

Ocular morbidity among children (aged 6-18 yr) of the tribal area of Melghat, India: A community-based study
CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of refractive error and VAD in this study was significantly higher than the rest of India and the world. For the prevention of childhood blindness, immediate intervention programme, including eye screening by trained paramedics, treatment by an ophthalmologist and prophylaxis, is crucial.PMID:38006342 | DOI:10.4103/ijmr.ijmr_3228_21 (Source: The Indian Journal of Medical Research)

Challenges in screening for sickle cell disease among newborns from the tribal region of Palghar, Maharashtra during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: The study emphasizes the importance of network building, use of virtual platform and engaging health workers in tribal settings. Such pragmatic approaches have the potential to pave a path for further implementation research involving specific interventions to improve health outcomes in tribal settings.PMID:38006343 | DOI:10.4103/ijmr.ijmr_3220_21 (Source: The Indian Journal of Medical Research)

Correlation of microvessel density with histopathological parameters of carcinoma breast
CONCLUSIONS: A positive linear correlation of the microvessel counts and the NPI scores suggest that with an increase in tumour angiogenesis, there was increased proliferative potential. Based on the significant correlation between the microvessel counts and the vascular invasion of the tumour masses in this study, it can be assumed that there will be vascular invasion if the microvessel count is higher and vice-versa. Although it is established that angiogenesis and neovascularization are required for the expansion of the solid tumour tissue, the heterogeneous nature of this entity makes it difficult for obtaining a linea...

Comparison of acceptability & amp; efficacy of thermal ablation (thermocoagulation) & amp; cryotherapy in VIA positive cervical lesions: A pilot study
CONCLUSIONS: In the context of screen-and-treat programme in settings such as India, thermal ablation appears to be a better method of treatment than cryotherapy for cervical pre-cancerous lesions particularly in terms of better provision and client acceptability.PMID:38006345 | DOI:10.4103/ijmr.ijmr_1166_22 (Source: The Indian Journal of Medical Research)

Modulation of semaphorin 3C & amp; 4D expression in cancerous tissues from individuals with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma
CONCLUSIONS: Increased expression of Sema3C but decreased expression of Sema4D in tumour tissue of LSCC may introduce these two growth factors as crucial mediators orchestrating tumour growth in individuals with LSCC. This result could open a new vision for the treatment of this malignancy.PMID:38006346 | DOI:10.4103/ijmr.ijmr_3148_21 (Source: The Indian Journal of Medical Research)

Acinetobacter baumannii in suspected bacterial infections: Association between multidrug resistance, virulence genes, & amp; biofilm production
CONCLUSIONS: The majority of isolates studied were from lower respiratory tract specimens. The high MDR rate and its positive association with biofilm formation indicate the nosocomial distribution of A. baumannii. The biofilm formation and the presence of Bap were not interrelated, indicating that biofilm formation was not regulated by a single factor. The MDR rate and the presence of OmpA and Bap showed a positive association (P<0.05). The isolates co-harbouring different carbapenem resistance genes were the predominant biofilm producers, which will seriously limit the therapeutic options suggesting the need for stric...
