Care fragmentation is associated with increased mortality after ileostomy creation
Ileostomy is the mainstay treatment option for various gastrointestinal conditions. Given the increased risk of post-discharge complications and high readmission rates that can be further aggravated by receiving care at different facilities (care fragmentation), further examination is necessary. We thus used a national cohort to explore the associations of care fragmentation among ileostomy patients experiencing adverse outcomes and increased hospitalization expenditures. (Source: Surgery)

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass versus fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease in patients with obesity results in comparable outcomes
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and fundoplication are effective treatments for gastroesophageal reflux disease, though the optimal procedure of choice in obesity is unknown. We hypothesize that Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is non-inferior to fundoplication for symptomatic control of gastroesophageal reflux disease in patients with obesity. (Source: Surgery)

Tumor volume-doubling rate is negatively associated with patient age in papillary thyroid microcarcinomas under active surveillance
Active surveillance of low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinomas has gained popularity worldwide as a management strategy. We previously reported that young age was associated with tumor enlargement by ≥3 mm. Here, we used the tumor volume-doubling rate to study the age-related tumor volume dynamics of papillary thyroid microcarcinomas under active surveillance. (Source: Surgery)
