Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 detection in wound tissue fluids for the assisted diagnosis of wound infection
Infections are commonly seen in wounds. The overall infection rate is 1.8% to 4.2%. Improper infection management can lead to serious conditions and may progress to life-threatening sepsis. Because there is a need for assistance in predicting wound infection before obvious clinical symptoms, the measurement of cytokines in wound tissue fluids has attracted our attention for determining the overall status of wound infection. Our intent was to assess the potential biomarkers in the diagnosis of wound infection. (Source: Surgery)

Future directions for emergency medical services development in low- and middle-income countries
The lack of prehospital care access in low- and middle-income countries is one of the greatest unmet needs and, therefore, one of the most urgent priorities in global health. Establishing emergency medical services in low- and middle-income countries poses significant challenges and complexities, requiring solutions tailored to prevailing conditions, informed by needs assessments, and adapted to meet local demands in a culturally appropriate and sustainable manner. In areas without existing emergency medical services, patients must rely on informal networks of untrained bystanders and community members to provide first aid...

The role of procalcitonin as a risk stratification tool of severity, prognosis, and need for surgery in patients with acute left-sided colonic diverticulitis
This study aims to investigate the role of an early procalcitonin assessment in the emergency department as a risk stratification tool for severity, prognosis, and need for surgery in patients with acute left-sided colonic diverticulitis. (Source: Surgery)

Mesenteric-based surgery for Crohn ’s disease: evidence and perspectives
Postoperative anastomotic recurrence of Crohn ’s disease is challenging and can lead to symptom recurrence and further surgery. The mesenteric pole of the intestine is the initial site of macroscopic anastomotic recurrence, and the mesentery may play an important role in recurrence after surgical resection. Therefore, “mesenteric-based surg ery” has gained increasing attention by clinicians. However, the role of mesentery in the postoperative recurrence remains controversial. This review will examine mesenteric changes in Crohn’s disease, proposed roles for mesentery in disease progression, and the potential for me...

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of adrenal hemorrhage
Although uncommon, adrenal hemorrhage has multiple etiologies. Because clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of patients with adrenal hemorrhage are inadequately described, we examined the underlying etiology, need for intervention, evolution of imaging characteristics, and adequacy of subsequent evaluation. SURGERY: Advancing Science and Extending Reach
Rarely do we highlight one article in this piece by the Editors-In-Chief: however, in this issue we highlight the Best in SURGERY article entitled, “CPT1B maintains redox homeostasis and inhibits ferroptosis to induce gemcitabine resistance via the KEAP1/NRF2 axis in pancreatic cancer” because this publication underscores the several strengths of SURGERY. Operative trends for pancreatic and hepatic malignancies during the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted routine health care, including many elective and non-cancer operations in the United States. Most hepato-pancreato-biliary malignancy patients require outpatient imaging, tissue sampling, and staging, and many undergo neoadjuvant therapy before operative intervention. The aims of this study were to evaluate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on hepato-pancreato-biliary oncologic operations and to determine whether trends in neoadjuvant therapy were altered by the pandemic. A clinicopathologic feature-based nomogram for preoperative estimation of splenic hilar lymph node metastasis in advanced proximal gastric cancer without invasion of the greater curvature
The indications for splenic hilar lymph node dissection in advanced proximal gastric cancer without invasion of the greater curvature are controversial. We aimed to develop a preoperative nomogram for individualized prediction of splenic hilar lymph node metastasis in non –greater curvature advanced proximal gastric cancer. (Source: Surgery)

Inflammatory bowel disease-associated colorectal cancer negatively affects surgery outcomes and health care costs
Inflammatory bowel disease may affect the pathogenesis and clinicopathologic course of colorectal cancer. We sought to characterize the impact of inflammatory bowel disease on outcomes after colectomy and/or proctectomy for a malignant indication. (Source: Surgery)

Generative artificial intelligence in surgery
Generative artificial intelligence is able to collect, extract, digest, and generate information in an understandable way for humans. As the first surgical applications of generative artificial intelligence are applied, this perspective paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current applications and future perspectives for the application of generative artificial intelligence in surgery, from preoperative planning to training.Generative artificial intelligence can be used before surgery for planning and decision support by extracting patient information and providing patients with information and simulation rega...
