Preoperative medically supervised weight loss programs and weight loss outcomes following bariatric surgery - a prospective analysis
CONCLUSIONS: These data do not suggest a relationship between engagement in a medically supervised weight loss program prior to bariatric surgery and weight loss after surgery in either the short- or the long-term.PMID:37945471 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.08.019 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Shape discrepancy, weight bias internalization, and eating-disorder psychopathology in patients with loss-of-control eating after bariatric surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Nearly all participants preferred a significantly smaller shape than their current shape. Greater discrepancy between current and ideal shape was associated with higher levels of a range of behavioral (ED psychopathology), cognitive (WBI), and psychological/somatic (depression) concerns. These findings, which persisted after adjusting for %WL, highlight the importance of addressing body image in postoperative interventions.PMID:37926627 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.09.028 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Effect of beta-blocker therapy on weight loss outcomes after sleeve gastrectomy & amp; Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
CONCLUSIONS: BB use may not significantly affect weight loss 12 months after bariatric surgery. This finding could enable physicians to prescribe BBs for improved blood pressure control in bariatric surgery patients with less concern of blunting weight loss. Longer term follow-up with a larger sample size would be an important next step to better characterize the relationship between BB usage and bariatric surgery.PMID:37925321 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.09.016 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Type 2 diabetes remission after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: a multicentered experience with long-term follow-up
CONCLUSIONS: Longer duration and higher severity of T2D were negatively associated with remission while higher %TBWL had a positive association. A significant proportion of patients in all quartiles experienced long-term remission after RYGB with a greater likelihood of remission correlated with greater weight loss.PMID:37914608 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.09.025 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Association of prior bariatric surgery with financial and clinical outcomes of acute myocardial infarction
CONCLUSION: Among acute MI patients with obesity, prior history of bariatric surgery was associated with decreased odds of in-hospital mortality, improved clinical outcomes, and lower resource utilization. Expansion of bariatric surgery programs may provide improved access to a medical intervention that is intertwined with cardiovascular health.PMID:37907385 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.09.023 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Risk stratified venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in bariatric patients using a Caprini assessment: practice patterns and opportunities for improvement
CONCLUSION: Caprini guideline-indicated VTE prophylaxis can be safely used in bariatric surgery patients and may reduce preventable VTE complications without increasing bleeding risk.PMID:37891100 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.09.018 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Racial disparities in selected micronutrient deficiencies after bariatric surgery: A systematic review
CONCLUSIONS: Although the literature on micronutrient outcomes following bariatric surgery according to race/ethnicity is limited, African Americans appear to experience a higher prevalence of vitamin deficiencies and associated conditions. Qualitative and quantitative research to explore these disparities is warranted.PMID:37891101 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.09.022 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)
