Hypovitaminosis D and hyperparathyroidism: a 5-year postoperative follow-up of 30,458 gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy patients
CONCLUSIONS: Previous studies alongside these results suggest that RYGB, more so than SG, may cause hypovitaminosis D and thereby hyperparathyroidism, which could lead to osteopenia. The threshold for 25-OH-D should be >75 nmol/L, and despite higher levels, current vitamin D supplementation may not be sufficient. Follow-up should include screening for hyperparathyroidism and hypovitaminosis D.PMID:38614927 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2024.02.004 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Cancer incidence, type, and survival after bariatric surgery
CONCLUSIONS: Bariatric surgery reduces the risk for developing cancer and offers survival advantage when compared with similar patients who do not undergo bariatric surgery.PMID:38614928 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2024.03.009 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Short-term effects of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or gastric sleeve on bone mineral density and calciotropic hormones: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Surg Obes Relat Dis. 2024 Mar 12:S1550-7289(24)00114-X. doi: 10.1016/j.soard.2024.03.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRoux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and gastric sleeve (GS) have been associated with significant reductions in bone mineral density (BMD) and fluctuations in serum levels of calciotropic hormones. These changes pose a risk to bone health. The study assessed the short-term (12 and 24 months) effects of RYGB and GS on BMD and calciotropic hormones. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. Analyses considered follow-up (12 and 24 months) with BMD as main outcome at three sites (femoral neck...

The feasibility and outcomes of metabolic and bariatric surgery prior to neoplastic therapy
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the potential feasibility of employing MBS prior to neoplastic therapy in patients with low-grade, less aggressive neoplasms in the context of obesity. This underscores the importance of providing a personalized, case-to-case multidisciplinary approach in the management of these patients.PMID:38594091 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2024.02.008 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)

Does routine upper gastrointestinal swallow study after metabolic and bariatric surgery lead to earlier diagnosis of leak?
CONCLUSIONS: Routine SS was not associated with earlier diagnosis of leaks compared to the absence of routine SS. Surgeons should consider abandoning the practice of routine SS for the purpose of obtaining earlier diagnosis of postoperative leaks.PMID:38570283 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2024.02.005 (Source: Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases : official journal of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery)
