The relationship of the efficiency of energy conversion into growth as an indicator for the determination of the optimal dose for mutation breeding with the appearance of chromosomal abnormalities and incomplete mitosis after gamma irradiation of kernels of Triticum turgidum ssp. durum L
Radiat Environ Biophys. 2023 Apr 19. doi: 10.1007/s00411-023-01026-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe study aim was to determine the optimal gamma irradiation dose for mutation breeding in Triticum turgidum ssp. durum L. Root, shoot and seedling growth, as well as the efficiency of energy conversion into growth were determined to examine the growth retardation effects of gamma irradiation that are the result of DNA damage (bridges, ring chromosomes, micronuclei, incomplete mitosis) in Triticum turgidum ssp. durum L. The kernels were irradiated with doses of 50, 150, 250 and 350 Gy using a 60Cobalt gamma-ray source. The k...

Transfer of elements from soil to earthworms and ground beetles in boreal forest
In this study, the transfer of 34 elements from soil to these organisms was studied in a field study conducted in boreal forest. The earthworm concentrations were compared to the values obtained in an experimental mesocosm study using soil from the field site and were found to be highly correlated. This indicates that the results of mesocosm studies can be used for predicting the transfer of elements from soil to fauna in natural conditions. Furthermore, concentrations in individual earthworm and beetle species were found to be similar to those observed in broader groups of related species, indicating that the generic appr...

Space radiation quality factor for Galactic Cosmic Rays and typical space mission scenarios using a microdosimetric approach
Radiat Environ Biophys. 2023 Apr 16. doi: 10.1007/s00411-023-01023-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSpace radiation exposure from omnipresent Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) in interplanetary space poses a serious carcinogenic risk to astronauts due to the-limited or absent-protective effect of the Earth's magnetosphere and, in particular, the terrestrial atmosphere. The radiation risk is directly influenced by the quality of the radiation, i.e., its pattern of energy deposition at the micron/DNA scale. For stochastic biological effects, radiation quality is described by the quality factor, [Formula: see text], which can be de...

Recent review of natural and artificial background radiation dosimetry studies in Saudi Arabia
Radiat Environ Biophys. 2023 Apr 8. doi: 10.1007/s00411-023-01022-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis paper includes a review of the natural background radiation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The review deals with natural radioactivity measurements conducted in the past few decades in the Kingdom. The numerous research works reviewed refer to different materials soils processed building material, terrestrial (dwellings) and mining sites. For the measurements, different experimental techniques were adopted. The highest mean specific activity of 238U, 232Th and 40 K in soil samples was found to be 39.0, 25.6, and 343.0 B...
