Adaptation and translation of a scalable measure for assessing health worker competence to deliver a brief psychological intervention: A case study from central India of its comparison to a performance-based measure
AbstractEfforts to reduce the global burden of common mental disorders have focused on scaling up evidence-based training programs for non-specialist providers to deliver brief psychological interventions. To evaluate these provider training programs, appropriate and scalable assessments of competency need to be developed alongside them. We followed a systematic approach for the cultural adaptation and translation into Hindi of a valid, English, multiple-choice applied knowledge measure to assess non-specialists ’ competence to deliver a brief psychological intervention for depression in rural India. We then explored the...

Maternal-Infant Attachment and its Relationships with Postpartum Depression, Anxiety, Affective Instability, Stress, and Social Support in a Canadian Community Sample
AbstractAs a crucial component of child development, maternal-infant attachment influences a child ’s cognitive, psychological, and social development. The aim of this study was to examine the association s of maternal-infant attachment with depression, anxiety, affective instability, stress, social support, and other variables in a community sample of Canadian postpartum women. Does Street Outreach Engage Its Intended Target Population? Clinical Experience in the Veteran ’s Health Administration Homeless Service Programs
Conclusion: Despite epidemiologic evidence in the literature showing higher medical, psychiatric, and social and financial vulnerabilities among unsheltered homeless individuals, our street outreach group was not found to be any worse off on such variables than the clinic-referred or self-referred groups, other than increased time unsheltered. Outreach workers seem to engage more unsheltered individuals, but do not necessarily engage those with such severe vulnerabilities. Dedicated outreach program funding, training, and suppor t are needed to support street outreach to those with the most severe problems. (Source: Psychiatric Quarterly)

Satisfaction and Perceived Coercion in Voluntary Hospitalisations: Impact of Past Coercive Experiences
AbstractCoercion in psychiatry is associated with several detrimental effects, including in the long term. The effect of past experience of coercion on the perception of subsequent hospitalisations remains less studied. The present study aimed to assess the impact of past experience of coercion on the perception of coercion and satisfaction with subsequent voluntary hospitalisations. A total of 140 patients who were hospitalised on a voluntary basis were included. Fifty-three patients experienced coercion before this hospitalisation and 87 did not. Patients were assessed for treatment satisfaction and perceived coercion. H...

The Role of Social Support in Coping with Psychological Trauma: An Integrated Biopsychosocial Model for Posttraumatic Stress Recovery
AbstractThis theoretical review proposes an integrated biopsychosocial model for stress recovery, highlighting the interconnectedness of intra- and interpersonal coping processes. The proposed model is conceptually derived from prior research examining interpersonal dynamics in the context of stressor-related disorders, and it highlights interconnections between relational partner dynamics, perceived self-efficacy, self-discovery, and biological stress responsivity during posttraumatic recovery. Intra- and interpersonal processes are discussed in the context of pre-, peri-, and post-trauma stress vulnerability as ongoing t...
