Staging's determinants in early intervention youth: a retrospective study
CONCLUSIONS: As all our participants were seen in tertiary care, adolescent psychiatrists were more efficient in detecting a high-risk state. "No psychosis" help-seekers presented in fact mood issues, which have been confused with attenuated psychotic symptoms by their addressers, who have probably been misled by their absence of activity integration. High-risk and characterized psychotic episodes were logically correlated with family history. Surprisingly, "first episode psychosis" youth were currently integrated in scholarly or professional life despite an active cognitive complaint. Robust studies, especially prospectiv...

Restraint in geriatrics: France's backwardness
Encephale. 2023 Nov 18:S0013-7006(23)00175-6. doi: 10.1016/j.encep.2023.08.010. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the absence of legal provisions, passive physical restraint methods in geriatrics were defined at the start of this century, accompanied by recommendations relating to their use. Despite the frequency of these measures of restraint, there are few French publications on this subject. It seems that this practice varies according to the geriatric establishments and prevails in hospital more than in nursing home. The most widespread method is the dual barrier on the bed, as well as in hospital than in nursing home. ...

Impact of follow-up by peer support workers on mental health service users' global functioning and self-stigmatisation
CONCLUSIONS: Despite difficulties concerning follow-up of service users during the course of the study and the reluctance to integrate a new profession based on experiential knowledge, it appears that the hope of recovery can improve global functioning of people with mental disorders. The reasons for low self-stigmatization and its stability over time remain to be explored.PMID:37985258 | DOI:10.1016/j.encep.2023.08.011 (Source: L Encephale)

The bifocal model: A two-level clinical model of psychiatric disorders integrating diagnostic and transdiagnostic approaches
Encephale. 2023 Nov 18:S0013-7006(23)00093-3. doi: 10.1016/j.encep.2023.06.009. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNowadays, two distinct conceptualizations are available to classify, label and guide the treatment of psychiatric disorders: the diagnostic approach and the transdiagnostic approach. There are pros and cons to both approaches. We propose here to link these two conceptualizations by creating a two-level clinical model that takes advantages of both approaches, named the bifocal model (BFM). This two-tier clinical model consists of a double level of analysis: the first step is to identify transdiagnostic mechanisms in...

Bullying and self-harming behavior in universities  - A cross-sectional study of a sample of 327 university students
CONCLUSION: Even though bullying is an event less experienced in university than in school, it is nevertheless still present with potential negative impact on the victims. Bullying in a university setting is a public health issue that could benefit from more studies as well as prevention and intervention programs.PMID:37985260 | DOI:10.1016/j.encep.2023.08.012 (Source: L Encephale)

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD): Drug and psychotherapeutique management, a literature review
CONCLUSION: In order to better evaluate treatments for PMDD, there is a need to homogenise studies on the subject at several levels: design, treatment doses, psychotherapeutic techniques, and evaluation measures. At present, some studies include both premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and PMDD patients. PMS and PMDD do not include the same symptoms, nor the same severity and potentially the same aetiology in the patients studied. In order to propose rigorous research that evaluates the effectiveness of treatments for PMDD and to properly support people with both these disorders, it seems essential to distinguish the two condition...
