Prevalence of mental disorders in closed educational centers in France
CONCLUSION: This study is the first French epidemiological study of mental disorders in juvenile offenders. It suggests that the detection of psychiatric disorders in young people in CEC is an important prerequisite for the implementation of targeted interventions according to different profiles. Furthermore, collaboration between the medical-psychological and judicial fields, in the form of an operational partnership, is necessary to guarantee better support for these young people.PMID:38368185 | DOI:10.1016/j.encep.2023.11.026 (Source: L Encephale)

Prevalence of hepatitis C, hepatitis B and HIV and their therapeutic management in a French public psychiatric hospital
CONCLUSION: Our study confirms that the prevalence of HCV infection is significantly higher in the psychiatric population than in the general population. By far, the main risk factor for HCV infection is drug use. This justifies the systematic performance of regular screening in this population. The way in which DAAs are financed in psychiatric hospitals seems to be a major obstacle to the initiation of treatment for chronic HCV infection during hospitalization and therefore to the elimination of HCV infection in the psychiatric population.PMID:38368186 | DOI:10.1016/j.encep.2023.11.023 (Source: L Encephale)

Non-pharmacological treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder with or without Hyperactivity (ADHD). Overview and report of the first international symposium on the non-pharmacological management of ADHD
The objective of this symposium is to determine the effects of non-pharmacological approaches on ADHD symptoms. Results indicate that the following intervention are promising approaches: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based interventions (MBI), yoga, cognitive and metacognitive intervention, neurofeedback and parental training programs. Current research advocates multimodal approaches in conjunction with school or work accommodations integrating innovative technologies.PMID:38326137 | DOI:10.1016/j.encep.2023.04.010 (Source: L Encephale)

Impact of the diagnostic method for borderline personality disorder on the acute response and the risk of early relapse in major depressed individuals treated with ECT: A systematic literature review
CONCLUSION: Despite the need for studies of better scientific quality, the results of this systematic review seem to indicate that screening for BPD by systematic psychiatric interview during the pre-ECT assessment and the establishment of adequate therapeutic strategies in case of comorbid BPD could be promising options to allow better acute response and better prevention of early relapses in major depressed individuals treated with ECT.PMID:38311474 | DOI:10.1016/j.encep.2023.11.021 (Source: L Encephale)

Is mindfulness practice "at risk" of increasing spirituality? Systematic review and critical analysis of a claimed effect
This study aims to assess quantitative data regarding the impact of mindfulness meditation on spirituality and religiosity using quantitative validated scales.METHODS: A systematic review was conducted. PubMed was searched for relevant studies using keywords related to mindfulness and spirituality/religiosity scales. Four scales assessing spirituality were identified: FACIT-sp, INSPIRIT, DSES, and DUREL. Qualitative analysis determined if scale items pertained to spirituality or other topics considered by opponents to mindfulness as "at risk" for deviances or sectarian aberrations. Quantitative analysis assessed the effect...

Management strategies for antidepressant-related sexual dysfunction
Encephale. 2024 Feb 3:S0013-7006(24)00015-0. doi: 10.1016/j.encep.2023.11.025. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAntidepressant-related sexual dysfunction is one of the most frequently met adverse effects for individuals suffering from major depressive disorder. When primary prevention by non-pharmacological measures fails, empirical coping strategies might be proposed. In this article, we present a brief overview of pharmacological strategies for antidepressant-related sexual dysfunction, considering antidepressants and conceivable corrective medications. We suggest dividing these strategies into three groups: (1) tapering (d...

Validation of the French COVID-Related Thoughts and Behavioral Symptoms Questionnaire (Cov-Tabs): A self-report assessment
CONCLUSION: Our study indicates that the French version of the Cov-Tabs has robust psychometric properties and is a valid tool for evaluating behavioral symptomatology and thoughts related to COVID-19 disease. Therefore, the French version of the Cov-Tabs is a valid tool that can be used in French-speaking individuals.PMID:38311477 | DOI:10.1016/j.encep.2023.11.010 (Source: L Encephale)

Anorexia nervosa: Enhancing motivation to change with self-determination theory
Encephale. 2024 Feb 3:S0013-7006(24)00001-0. doi: 10.1016/j.encep.2023.11.011. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMotivational deficits (little or no motivation to change) are often reported in patients with eating disorders, particularly anorexia nervosa. The motivational approaches frequently used by French clinicians rely solely on a dichotomous view of motivation (intrinsic vs. extrinsic). In self-determination theory, certain forms of extrinsic motivation can strengthen an individual's commitment to an activity, providing they are self-determined. This theory therefore extends and enriches the dual motivational approach by...
