Determination of energy requirements after minor burns using indirect calorimetry: A descriptive cohort study
CONCLUSION: Performing indirect calorimetry in adults with minor burns revealed that ≥40% of the tested adults presented a hypermetabolism and that their mEE was not covered by their energy intakes.PMID:38400637 | DOI:10.1002/jpen.2614 (Source: JPEN Journal Of Parenteral And Enteral Nutrition)

Decreased abdominal wall muscle mass defined by muscle ultrasound is associated with malnutrition according to Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria in renal transplant recipients: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: One in four RTRs experience malnutrition. Muscle US could be used effectively for the diagnosis of reduced muscle mass and malnutrition in RTRs according to GLIM criteria.PMID:38367017 | DOI:10.1002/jpen.2608 (Source: JPEN Journal Of Parenteral And Enteral Nutrition)

Preventative and therapeutic potential of nutrition for inflammatory bowel diseases: A narrative review
JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr. 2024 Feb 15. doi: 10.1002/jpen.2606. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiet strongly shapes the gut microbiome and metabolome, which in turn influence intestinal inflammation in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Separate from inflammation and malnutrition, diet's direct interactions with the gastrointestinal system can also provoke or attenuate a host of nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms. Given these multifaceted effects of diet on inflammation and symptoms, nutrition has been investigated for its potential roles in the prevention and treatment of IBD. This review presents epidem...

Association between energy delivery from parenteral nutrition and refeeding syndrome in hospitalized adults: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: RFS was common among hospitalized patients receiving PN. The amount of energy delivered on the first day of PN was independently associated with RFS, raising a concern regarding initiation of PN with higher energy.PMID:38341682 | DOI:10.1002/jpen.2605 (Source: JPEN Journal Of Parenteral And Enteral Nutrition)

Highlights in the clinical nutrition literature: A critical appraisal of current research
The objective of the held meeting session was to present identified key papers in the fields of critical care medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology, and adult internal medicine that were published in 2022, which would complement the knowledge of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of nutrition topics as well as to identify areas of future research. Overall, several large-scale randomized controlled studies were identified in each of these sections, with practice-changing major results. This manuscript summarizes the information that was presented and the discussions that followed.PMID:38310478 | DOI:10.1002/jpe...

Inflammation and response to nutrition interventions
JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr. 2024 Jan;48(1):27-36. doi: 10.1002/jpen.2534.ABSTRACTThe complex interplay between nutrition and inflammation has become a major focus of research in recent years across different clinical settings and patient populations. Inflammation has been identified as a key driver for disease-related malnutrition promoting anorexia, reduced food intake, muscle loss, and on a cellular level, insulin resistance, which together stimulate catabolism. However, these effects may well be bidirectional, and there is strong evidence showing that nutrition influences inflammation. Several single nutrients and die...
