Analysis of general payments from industry to dermatology nonphysician clinicians in the United States, 2021-2022
To the Editor: The 2013 inauguration of Open Payments elevated the transparency of financial transactions connecting the healthcare industry and physicians and in 2021 extended its scope to encompass nonphysician clinicians (NPCs).1 Despite existing characterization of the workforce attributes of NPCs in dermatology,2 payments to NPCs are unexplored and important to investigate, given the potential for conflicts of interest that may impact practice. Photobiomodulation CME Part I: Overview and Mechanism of Action
Photobiomodulation (PBM), previously known as low-level laser light therapy, represents a non-invasive form of phototherapy that utilizes wavelengths in the red light (RL, 620-700 nm) portion of the visible light (VL, 400-700 nm) spectrum and the near-infrared (NIR, 700-1440 nm) spectrum. PBM is a promising and increasingly used therapy for the treatment of various dermatologic and non-dermatologic conditions. Photons from RL and NIR are absorbed by endogenous photoreceptors including mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase (COX). (Source: Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology)

Photobiomodulation CME Part II: Clinical Applications in Dermatology
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is an emerging treatment modality in dermatology with increasing office and home-based use. PBM is the use of various light sources in the red light (620-700 nm) and near-infrared (700-1440 nm) spectrum as a form of light therapy. PBM is often administered through low-level lasers or light-emitting diodes. Studies show that PBM can be used effectively to treat conditions secondary to cancer therapies, alopecia, ulcers, herpes simplex virus, acne, skin rejuvenation, wounds, and scars. Emulsifiers are not necessary to make formulas for deep chemical peeling: Response to Wambier et  al., “Advanced chemical peels: Phenol-croton oil peel”
Septisol (SEP), one of the 4 ingredients of Dr T. Baker's formula (1961) and also Dr Greg Hetter's1 formulas, has been banned by the Food and Drug Administration and is no longer available for deep chemical peels. SEP is an emulsifying (soap) agent for water, pure phenol and croton oil, and has been a key ingredient for decades. Do we need an emulsifier? We believe the answer is no, as the history of deep peels documents and through our own extensive experience (Table I). (Source: Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology)
