Emulsifiers are not necessary to make formulas for deep chemical peeling: Response to Wambier et al., “Advanced chemical peels: Phenol-croton oil peel”
Septisol (SEP), one of the 4 ingredients of Dr T. Baker's formula (1961) and also Dr Greg Hetter's1 formulas, has been banned by the Food and Drug Administration and is no longer available for deep chemical peels. SEP is an emulsifying (soap) agent for water, pure phenol and croton oil, and has been a key ingredient for decades. Do we need an emulsifier? We believe the answer is no, as the history of deep peels documents and through our own extensive experience (Table I).
