Implementation of a teen sleep app in Canadian high schools: Preliminary evidence of acceptability, engagement, and capacity for supporting healthy sleep habits
J Sleep Res. 2024 Mar 20:e14199. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14199. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHigh school students suffer from mental health challenges and poorer academic performance resulting from sleep disturbances. Unfortunately, approaches to this problem sometimes focus on increasing sleep duration by going to bed early; a strategy with limited success because teens experience a phase delay in bedtimes. There is a need for approaches that leverage behavioural sleep science and are accessible, scalable, and easily disseminated to students. DOZE (Delivering Online Zzz's with Empirical Support) is a self-management app that is...

Association of sleep duration and sleep quality with gestational diabetes mellitus in pregnant women after treatment with assisted reproductive technology: A birth cohort study
In conclusion, excessive sleep duration (≥10 h) is associated with a high risk of gestational diabetes mellitus in pregnant women who conceived with the help of assisted reproductive technology, and maternal age may modify this effect.PMID:38499503 | DOI:10.1111/jsr.14191 (Source: Journal of Sleep Research)

Nocturnal vestibular stimulation using a rocking bed improves a severe sleep disorder in a patient with mitochondrial disease
We present the case of a 12-year-old boy diagnosed with a severe primary mitochondrial disease, exhibiting ataxia, spasticity, progressive external ophthalmoplegia, cardiomyopathy and severely disrupted sleep, but no cognitive impairment. Interestingly, his parents reported improved sleep during night train rides. Based on this observation, we installed a rocking bed in the patient's bedroom and performed different interventions, including immersive multimodal vestibular, kinesthetic and auditory stimuli, reminiscent of the sensory experiences encountered during train rides. Over a 5-month period, we conducted four 2-week ...

An expedited model for identifying potential patients with periodic leg movements
This study aimed to identify baseline characteristics, symptoms, or questionnaires that could help to identify sleep-disordered breathing patients with significant PLMS. Patients aged 20-80 years who underwent polysomnography for assessing sleep disturbance were included. Various factors such as sex, age, body measurements, symptoms, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), and sleep quality scales were analysed to determine the presence of PLMS. The study included 1480 patients with a mean age of 46.4 ± 13.4 years, among whom 110 (7.4%) had significant PLMS with a PLM index of 15 or higher. There were no significant differences obser...

Actigraphic sleep patterns are associated with bone turnover and bone mineral density among university students
J Sleep Res. 2024 Mar 17:e14192. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14192. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPoorer sleep is associated with poorer bone health among older adults but the role of sleep in bone health during younger adulthood is understudied. In this observational study, the averages and variability in total sleep time (TST), sleep efficiency (SE), and sleep midpoint of university students were examined in relation to levels of bone turnover markers (BTMs) and bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine and femur. A sample of healthy, university students (N = 59, aged 18-25 years, 51.8% female, body mass index <30 kg/m2 ), ...

The role of physical activity on obstructive sleep apnea severity and hypoxic load, and the mismatch between subjective and objective physical activity assessments
The objectives of this study were: (i) to assess the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea severity (both apnea-hypopnea index and desaturation parameters) and both objectively and subjectively measured physical activity after adjustment for anthropometry and body composition parameters; and (ii) to assess the relationship between objective and subjective physical activity parameters and whether obstructive sleep apnea severity has a modulatory effect on this relationship. Fifty-four subjects (age 47.7 ± 15.0 years, 46% males) were categorized into groups according to obstructive sleep apnea severity: no obstructiv...

Digital cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia reduces insomnia in nurses suffering from shift work disorder: A randomised-controlled pilot trial
J Sleep Res. 2024 Mar 14:e14193. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14193. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInsomnia is a primary symptom of shift work disorder, yet it remains undertreated. This randomised-controlled pilot trial examined the efficacy of a digital, guided cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia adapted to shift work (SleepCare) in nurses with shift work disorder. The hypothesis was that SleepCare reduces insomnia severity compared with a waitlist control condition. A total of 46 unmedicated nurses suffering from shift work disorder with insomnia (age: 39.7 ± 12.1 years; 80.4% female) were randomised to the SleepCare group ...

Personalising circadian hygiene educational initiatives aimed at university students-"He who has ears to hear, let him hear"
J Sleep Res. 2024 Mar 14:e14194. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14194. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of the present study was to characterise "early drop-outs" (n = 3185) out of a group of university students (n = 7766) engaged in an ongoing circadian education initiative, to evaluate its efficacy and direct its developments. The initiative is aimed at improving sleep timing/quality through one of two sets of circadian hygiene advice covering the timing of sleep, meals, exercise and light exposure, and it has already been shown to have a positive effect on sleep timing. This second, interim analysis confirmed the high prevalence...
