Parental sleep-related practices and sleep in children aged 1-3  years: a systematic review
J Sleep Res. 2023 Dec 22:e14120. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14120. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe current systematic review sought to identify the relationship between the range of different parental sleep-related practices that had been explored in relations to child sleep outcomes in children aged 1-3 years. A systematic literature review was carried out in CINAHL, The Cochrane Library, PsycArticles, PsycInfo, PubMed and Web of Science, as well as relevant grey literature in August 2022 using the terms; population (children, aged 1-3 years), exposure (parental sleep-related practice) and outcome (child sleep). Any quantitative ...

Insufficient sleep blunts positive, but not negative, affective response to emotionally complex film clips
J Sleep Res. 2023 Dec 20:e14111. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14111. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe effects of sleep deprivation on emotional function are not yet fully understood. Although sleep deprivation has been shown to have larger effects on positive emotional reactivity than on negative, this research has been limited by the use of separate stimuli for positive and negative emotion elicitation. Different sets of stimuli represent a confound that makes it difficult to interpret this difference with confidence. The study reported here was designed to overcome this limitation by using film clips that elicit both positive and n...

Evaluating the effect of preoperative interventions on sleep health in the perioperative period: a systematic review
The objective of this systematic review was to summarise preoperative interventions that report sleep outcomes. Studies that delivered an intervention initiated >24 h prior to surgery among an adult sample without a diagnosed sleep disorder were included. Studies were excluded if they were preclinical or were not published in English. MEDLINE, MEDLINE ePubs Ahead of Print and In-process Citations, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, APA PsycINFO, CINAHL, and the Web of Science were searched on February 2, 2023. This review was reported in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Revie...

Association between alcohol use disorder and risk of obstructive sleep apnea
This study suggests an association between alcohol use disorders and the risk of OSA. The frequency of alcohol consumption, quantity of alcohol consumed, and snoring frequency were associated with the risk of OSA. Therefore, ceasing alcohol consumption is recommended as an effective approach to enhancing sleep quality.PMID:38112217 | DOI:10.1111/jsr.14128 (Source: Journal of Sleep Research)

Sleep-dependent memory consolidation of televised content in infants
J Sleep Res. 2023 Dec 19:e14121. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14121. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInfants face the constant challenge of selecting information for encoding and storage from a continuous incoming stream of data. Sleep might help in this process by selectively consolidating new memory traces that are likely to be of future relevance. Using a deferred imitation paradigm and an experimental design, we asked whether 15- and 24-month-old infants (N = 105) who slept soon after encoding a televised demonstration of target actions would show higher imitation scores (retention) after a 24-h delay than same-aged infants who stay...

An acute bout of high-intensity exercise affects nocturnal sleep and sleep-dependent memory consolidation
J Sleep Res. 2023 Dec 19:e14126. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14126. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute exercise has been shown to affect long-term memory and sleep. However, it is unclear whether exercise-induced changes in sleep architecture are associated with enhanced memory. Recently, it has been shown that exercise followed by a nap improved declarative memory. Whether these effects transfer to night sleep and other memory domains has not yet been studied. Here, we investigate the influence of exercise on nocturnal sleep architecture and associations with sleep-dependent procedural and declarative memory consolidation. Nineteen...
