A systematic review and meta-analysis on the efficacy of sleep interventions to treat suicidal ideation
This study aims to provide the first systematic review and meta-analysis on the efficacy of sleep interventions to treat suicidal ideation. This systematic review and meta-analysis, registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews, was conducted in PsycINFO, through Ovid. A sample of eight articles were deemed eligible and a total of 21 effect sizes were included. Egger's test suggested that no publication bias was present (b = 0.3695; p = 0.0852). The pooled effect size for sleep treatments on suicidal ideation was small (g = -0.0931, p = 0.3047). Significant heterogeneity was present (I2 = 44....

Investigating the subjective and objective efficacy of a cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I)-based smartphone app on sleep: A randomised controlled trial
J Sleep Res. 2023 Dec 29:e14136. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14136. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDue to insufficient treatment options for insomnia, effective solutions are urgently needed. We evaluated the effects of a CBT-I-based app combining sleep training with subjective and objective sleep monitoring on (i) sleep and (ii) subjective-objective sleep discrepancies (SOSD). Fifty-seven volunteers (20-76 years; MAge = 45.67 ± 16.38; 39 female) suffering from sleep problems were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EG, n = 28) or a waitlist control group (CG, n = 29). During the 6-week app phase, the EG used the CBT-I-based ...

Increased training load promotes sleep propensity and slow-wave sleep in endurance runners: Can a high-heat-capacity mattress topper modulate this effect?
J Sleep Res. 2023 Dec 26:e14132. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14132. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present study aimed to: (1) investigate sleep architecture in response to an overload training and taper periods among endurance runners; and (2) assess the sleep benefits of a high-heat-capacity mattress topper. Twenty-one trained male endurance runners performed a 2-week usual training regimen (baseline) followed by 2-week overload and taper periods. From overload to the end of the taper period, they were assigned into two groups based on the mattress topper used: high-heat-capacity mattress topper (n = 11) or low-heat-capacity mat...

Multi-centre arousal scoring agreement in the Sleep Revolution
In conclusion, the scoring agreement varied depending on the arousal type, sleep stage, and scorer pair, but was overall relatively low. The most uncertain areas were related to spontaneous arousals and arousals scored in the wake stage. These results indicate that manual arousal scoring is generally not reliable, and that changes are needed in the assessment of sleep fragmentation for clinical and research purposes.PMID:38148632 | DOI:10.1111/jsr.14127 (Source: Journal of Sleep Research)

Glymphatic dysfunction coincides with lower GABA levels and sleep disturbances in succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency
This study aimed to determine whether indices of the hyperGABAergic state characteristic of SSADHD coincide with glymphatic dysfunction and sleep disturbances and to explicate the modulatory effect that GABA may have on the glymphatic system. The study included 42 individuals (21 with SSADHD; 21 healthy controls) who underwent brain MRIs and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) for assessment of glymphatic dysfunction and cortical GABA, plasma GABA measurements, and circadian clock gene expression. The SSADHD subjects responded to an additional Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). Compared with the control group,...
