Low Utilization of Direct-Acting Antiviral Agents in a Large National Cohort of HIV and HCV Coinfected Medicare Patients in the United States: Implications for HCV Elimination
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is common in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). The advent of direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) has made HCV elimination a realistic goal. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the US Medicare Fee-For-Service claims data and outpatient prescription drug data to assess the HCV DAA initiation and completion among newly diagnosed HIV–HCV-coinfected Medicare patients enrolled in 2014-2016. DAA initiation was defined as filling at least 1 prescription of DAAs during 2014-2016. DAA completion was defined as taking an 8-week or longer DAA treatment course for patients without ci...

Detection of Recurrent Hepatitis C Viremia Using Surveillance Data, New York City
The introduction of direct-acting antivirals for treating hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has greatly improved cure rates. However, persons with past HCV infection who engage in high-risk behaviors can be reinfected. Surveillance data from the New York City (NYC) Health Department were used to detect and investigate individuals cured during January 2014 to December 2016 who had a subsequent positive RNA test (recurrence) by April 2018. Clinical interpretation of recurrence was obtained using provider interviews and review of medical records available through Regional Health Information Organizations. Among 6938 cured ind...

An Evaluation of Syndromic Surveillance–Related Practices Among Selected State and Local Health Agencies
Conclusion: Overall, syndromic surveillance was relevantly integrated into the public health surveillance infrastructure. The near real-time nature of the data and its flexibility to monitor different types of health-related issues make it especially useful for public health practitioners. Despite these advances, syndromic surveillance capacity, locally and nationally, must continue to evolve and progress should be monitored to ensure that syndromic surveillance systems and data are optimally able to meet jurisdictional needs. Regarding Investment in a Healthier Future: Impact of the 2012 Institute of Medicine Finance Report
Conclusions: The Finance report has served as a strong impetus for advocating for an increased investment in governmental public health. Efforts are bolstered by informed public health practitioners and stakeholders but often stymied by policy makers who must balance complex competing issues and priorities. Although many successes have occurred, further work is needed toward improving investment in the nation's public health. (Source: Journal of Public Health Management and Practice)

Public Education Interventions and Uptake of Human Papillomavirus Vaccine: A Systematic Review
Conclusion: Interventions that delivered HPV-related education by authoritative sources and included parents improved HPV vaccination rates among adolescents and young adults. Hospital Policies During COVID-19: An Analysis of Visitor Restrictions
Conclusion: Visitor restriction policies varied significantly among hospitals in this review. These variances create challenges in that their fair application may be problematic and ethical issues related to allocation may arise. Five recommendations are offered for hospitals revising or creating such policies, including that offering transparent, accessible, public-facing policies can minimize ethical dilemmas. In addition, hospitals would benefit from communicating with each other in the development of visitor policies to ensure uniformity and support patients and family members as they navigate hospital visitation. ...

Community Health Improvement Plans: An Analysis of Approaches Used by Local Health Departments
Context: The Public Health Accreditation Board requires accredited local health departments (LHDs) to complete community health improvement plans (CHIPs). Evidence suggests that participatory planning frameworks, cross-sector collaboration, social determinants of health (SDOHs), and steering organizations are integral to effective public health planning. However, little is known about the degree to which LHDs incorporate these aspects during the CHIP process. Objectives: To describe the use of planning methods, SDOHs, cross-sector partnerships, and steering organizations during the CHIP development process among...

Opioid Prescription Trends in a US Dental School Clinic, 2014-2018: A Retrospective Study Using Electronic Health Record Data
Conclusions: While causal relationships cannot be drawn between drug abuse and prescription trends alone, this exploratory study provided a better understanding of prescription frequency patterns that can help monitor distribution of opioids and identify areas where future public health interventions may be needed. Dental education institutions have an obligation to ensure a competent health care workforce as well as unique opportunities to support regional and national public health strategies aimed at reducing misuse of opioids.
