Factors related to the accumulation of healthy behavior among older adults attending primary Health Care
The objective was to investigate the factors related to the accumulation of healthy behavior among older adults attending Primary Health Care. Cross-sectional analysis with 201 older adults from baseline of Longitudinal Investigation of Functioning Epidemiology (LIFE) was performed in a Southeastern Brazilian city. The Healthy Behavior Score (HBS), ranging from 0 to 8, was calculated by the sum of the following habits: Physical activity practice, healthy eating, water consumption, night sleep time, not smoking, not drinking alcohol, frequent social relations, and spirituality. The Effects of Demographic Dynamics on Economic Growth in EU Economies: a Panel Vector Autoregressive Approach
This study estimates the effects of demographic dynamics on economic growth, with a focus on the working-age population and life expectancy in 19 European Union economies for 1970 –2020 and 2020–2050, using a panel vector autoregressive (PVAR) model as the analytical methodology. The main findings are as follows. First, the PVAR estimation identifies positive effects of the growth of the working-age population share and the extension of life expectancy on economic growth. Second, the contribution ratio of the demographic effects to economic growth for past population bonus periods is approximately 15% on average in thi...

Social Insurance for Long-term Care
AbstractThe issue of how best to finance long-term care (LTC) is the subject of recent reforms, forthcoming reforms or continuing debate in various countries and remains as relevant and challenging as ever. LTC services are crucial to the wellbeing of large numbers of older adults who need help with everyday tasks.Demand for LTC for older adults is projected to rise across developed and developing countries as the number of older adults rises. Supply of care services is likely to remain constrained due to shortages of long-term care workforce and financial constraints in many countries, and the financial risks associated w...

The New Version of the Relationship Grandparents-Grandchildren as an Opportunity of Unprecedented Bonds
AbstractThis paper seeks to review some of the changes in the grandparent-grandchildren relationship and the new roles that"grandparents" are taking on in the face of these transformations. The literature review suggests that this new grandparenthood seeks new ways of living with their grandchildren, exploring new qualities of life. There is a symmetrization effect and a similar or equal starting point in the exploration of life. Grandchildren explore how to become adults, grandparents explore how to leave behind the decrepit model of old people with which they no longer feel identified or comforted. Both are loo...

Can dementia become the most prevalent disease at the time of death in Germany? Projections up to the year 2060 for the five most important diseases at the time of death
AbstractData on the burden of disease in the last years of life are an important basis for health policy decisions and the allocation of health care resources. Since dementia is one of the most expensive diseases, we ask the question whether dementia will ever be the most common disease at the time of death in older people? While international cause-of-death statistics report the underlying cause of death, dementia patients generally die from complications or sequelae. Instead of using causes of death, we identified the five most prevalent disease categories at age 70 and older at the time of death using German health clai...

Towards An Age-Friendly Design Lens
AbstractThis paper discusses the growing importance of design to influencing healthy ageing outcomes in the future, while acknowledging past shortcoming and limitations in the design process through a critical review of practice and research. It explores a range of different design approaches which have been aimed at supporting people as they age, and looks at variations in sectoral expertise within the design discipline that affect our lives, from architecture to fashion. The paper makes the case for developing an age-friendly design lens to reorient the work of designers around the changing needs of older people, based o...

Macro-Demographics and Ageing in Emerging Asia: the Case of Indonesia
AbstractIn common with a number of other emerging economies in South East Asia, Indonesia is confronting rapid demographic transition at a low level of per capita income. The fourth largest country in the world by population size, Indonesia will face new challenges for fiscal sustainability and policy design, as in coming decades its labour force begins to shrink, and the older population becomes relatively more numerous. In this paper, we demonstrate how strong data sources, from international agencies, national sources, and surveys of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) family, are available and can be combined to gene...

Psychometric evaluation of the Decision Support Tool for Functional Independence in community-dwelling older people
CONCLUSIONThe DST-FI suggests high validity and moderate reliability properties when used in a population of community-dwelling older people. The tool could facilitate community-care professionals in their task to preserve FI in older people. Future research should focus on psychometric properties like feasibility, acceptability, and developing and piloting strategies for implementation in community-care. Ageing and Health in Africa: Assessing how low- and Middle-class Older Adults with Chronic Illnesses Navigate the Problem of Counterfeit Drugs in Nigeria
AbstractMany older adults in Nigeria live with chronic illnesses and regularly need drugs to manage them, however, procuring genuine drugs is a challenge given the proliferation of counterfeit drugs in Nigeria. Older adults in rural Nigeria who are largely poor with lower educational status may be disproportionately affected by this high proliferation of counterfeit drugs in Nigeria. With qualitative interviews from purposefully sampled 24 rural older adults in Southeast Nigeria, we explored the problem of widespread counterfeit drugs and how rural older adults with chronic illnesses navigate this problem in Nigeria. The c...

Health, Income, and Suicidal Ideation Among Older Adults in South Korea: A Gender Comparison
AbstractThe levels of suicide and suicidal ideation are relatively high at older ages across the world, and many researchers have explored the risk factors. Most studies view suicidal ideation as a mental health issue related to depression, which is caused largely by age-related reduction of status and loss of control. This paper takes a sociological perspective and postulates the relevance of societal normative pressures to analyses. We assume that the strong norms of gendered roles in South Korea (prescribing men to be breadwinners and women, homemakers) will moderate the way income and health affect suicidal ideation an...
