Trends and Inequality in the New Active Ageing and Well-Being Index of the Oldest Old: a Case Study of Sweden
In this study the focus instead is on the oldest old (75 years and older). The theoretical framework is inspired by the Active Ageing Index and the Nordic welfare research tradition. Active ageing and well-being indicators and domains of high relevance for the oldest old are used a nd a new Active Ageing-Well Being Index (AA-WB Index) is developed. Our aim is to go beyond averages and analyse changes over time and inequality in the AA-WB Index. The prime data is derived from two waves, 2004 and 2014, of the Swedish Panel Study of Living Conditions of the Oldest Old (SWEOLD), a nationally representative sample of older peo...

Hospital-to-Home Transition for Older Patients: Using Serious Games to Improve the Motivation for Rehabilitation – a Qualitative Study
AbstractTraditional physiotherapy is often perceived as repetitive and boring by patients, leading to issues in maintaining their interest and performing the required exercises. This paper investigates older patients ’ engagement and motivation for physical activity using a serious game-based rehabilitation compared to a control group using a standard care therapy, during hospitalization. We conducted a randomized clinical trial with 57 geriatric patients and demonstrated that the serious game-based rehabilita tion was as efficient as the standard rehabilitation program in terms of improving their functional capacity. In...

Effects of Playful Exercise of Older Adults on Balance and Physical Activity: a Randomized Controlled Trial
This study investigated the potential of engaging older adults in playful exercise to increase physical activity and balance. A randomised control trial (RCT) was performed with 26 independently living older adults (initially 38, but 12 were lost to illness or death during the course of the project), mean age 83.54 (SD: 7.12), 19 women. Participants were randomly allocated to intervention (n = 16) or control (n = 12) (originally 19 in each group). The intervention consisted of playful exercise on Moto tiles 6 * 2 min twice a week over 10 weeks, while control group participants engaged in normal daily activities.The...

Promoting Fall Prevention among Community Dwelling Older Adults through ActivLife: a Physical and Social Activation
AbstractFalls have been recognized as the second leading cause of injury or death for older adults. The related economic burden caused by fall related injuries is not negligible. Earlier research has demonstrated that regular participation in appropriate prescribed physical activity by improving upper and lower limb strength, balance, coordination, transfer skills, and reaction to environmental hazards can lower the risk for falls and fall-related fractures and other injuries. Conversely, physical inactivity can significantly double the risk of developing a disability, which will affect mobility as well as the ability to p...

Employment of Older People across Italian Regions: an Exploration of Drivers and Barriers Based on the Active Ageing Index
AbstractThe main aim of this study is to measure and evaluate the participation of aged people in the labour market in Italy based on the AAI and to identify determinants. We used Istat data from official surveys harmonized at European level or based on samples which are representative at national and subnational level. In Italy the increase in retirement age and discouragement of early retirement have determined deep changes in the age composition of the Italian workforce, with employment rate of aged workers increased considerably. Considering the multifaceted nature of active ageing, we used Principle Components Analysi...

Recommender System for Responsive Engagement of Senior Adults in Daily Activities
AbstractUnderstanding and predicting how people change their behavior after an intervention from time series data is an important task for health recommender systems. This task is especially challenging when the time series data is frequently sampled. In this paper, we develop and propose a novel recommender system that aims to promote physical activeness in elderly people. The main novelty of our recommender system is that it learns how senior adults with different lifestyle change their activeness after a digital health intervention from minute-by-minute fitness data in an automated way. We trained the system and validat...

Is Active Ageing Coping with Population Ageing? Draft Submitted to Journal of Population Aging
AbstractThe Active Ageing Index (AAI) is an important tool for measuring and comparing the potential for active and healthy ageing of different societies. Its 22 indicators arranged in 4 domains have been computed by UNECE for EU countries for the period 2010 –2018. Many of its constituent dimensions are negatively associated with age, with older people being less active. Given the context of generalized population ageing, of which EU countries stand at the forefront, it is natural to consider to what extent population ageing is affecting negatively ac tive ageing indicators. Based on indicator- and sex-specific linear m...

Aspects Influencing Food Intake and Approaches towards Personalising Nutrition in the Elderly
AbstractHealthy diets have been demonstrated to complement benefits of physical activity, physical condition and mental wellbeing, all of them being important factors influencing the quality of life of elderly. Unfortunately malnutrition is a serious threat and an increasingly prevalent condition among the fast-growing elderly population. The present work addresses the identification of important factors contributing to decreased appetite and food intake as well as the development of approaches towards a healthy diet and personalised nutrition in elderly. Within the present study semi-structured interviews with elderly and...

Vietnam ’s Population Projections and Aging Trends from 2010 to 2049
AbstractBased on Vietnam ’s 2009 population census, we use a population prediction model with three schemes (high, medium, and low) to predict the population and structural changes in Vietnam from 2010 to 2049, and we analyze the trend of Vietnam’s future aging population. Our results show that (1) Vietnam’s populatio n will continue to increase in the next 40 years, but the population growth rate will continue to decline, and the population will exceed 100 million in approximately 2024; (2) Vietnam’s demographic structure will change significantly as the fertility level and life expectancy increase; and (3) V iet...

A Probabilistic Cohort-Component Model for Population Forecasting – The Case of Germany
AbstractThe future development of population size and structure is of importance since planning in many areas of politics and business is conducted based on expectations about the future makeup of the population. Countries with both decreasing mortality and low fertility rates, which is the case for most countries in Europe, urgently need adequate population forecasts to identify future problems regarding social security systems as one determinant of overall macroeconomic development. This contribution proposes a stochastic cohort-component model that uses simulation techniques based on stochastic models for fertility, mig...

Time-to-Death and Health Care Expenditure: Evidence from China
This study analyses the impact of TTD on the health care expenditures of elderly people in China using data from the 2011 and 2013 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS). We found that when peopl e were near death, their health care expenditures increased insignificantly with age due to the relative concentration of total health care expenditures before death. When people were approaching death, their health care expenditures increased and then declined along with the increase in age. Thus, the Chinese government should take 15a cautious view of the relationship between population ageing and health care e...

Land, History and People: Older people ’s Stories about Meaningful Activities and Social Relations in Later Life
This study explores the possibilities of promoting well-being and person-centred care practices in the context of home-based elderly care. It is based on qualitative interviews and observational data from two rural municipalities in Northern Norway. Using descriptive-interpretive qualitative research methods, we have explored the met and unmet needs of 28 older adults receiving home-based care services. The interviews revealed that their needs for medical treatment and practical assistance in the home were largely accommodated for. However, they had needs that frequently remained unaddressed, particularly the need for soci...
