Structural Determinants of Workforce Participation after Retirement in Poland
AbstractIn this paper, we aim to analyse selected structural determinants of workforce participation after retirement in Poland. Bystructural determinants we mean characteristics of one ’s socio-economic position that (a) result from the interplay of social conditions (mechanisms of power, differentiated access to resources) and individual agency, and (b) restrict or facilitate individuals’ choices. We conceptualiseworkforce participation as engaging in either part- or full-time paid employment despite receiving the old-age pension. Our general hypothesis is that working in older age is not only a matter of motivation ...

Swiss Retirees as “Active Agers”: A Critical Look at this New Social Role
AbstractSimilar to other countries in the European Union, contemporary Switzerland faces concerns about an ageing population, and the policy framework of active ageing is one response. Today ’s retirees are asked to actively participate in society in ways that are recognized as social contributions. We argue, however, that the redefinition of the role of retiree to be an “active ager” rests upon gender inequalities, among others. As a result, this framework can reinforce the explo itation of elders, especially old women. To illustrate our argument, we draw on interviews conducted among Swiss retirees to demonstrate t...

A Century of Demographic Ageing in Arctic Canada (1950 –2050)
AbstractThe aim of this study is to identify the major characteristics of demographic ageing in the Canadian Arctic - Yukon, Nunavut, and Northwest Territories (NWT) - in the period 1950 to 2050. We measure ageing first conventionally, based on"chronological" age, as a point of comparison for results obtained applying new measures of ageing based on"prospective" age. The latter takes into account upward changes in life expectancy and longevity over recent decades. The findings are discussed for the territories with the oldest and youngest average ages, the regions ageing the fastest and slowest, for bot...

The Experiences of Retired Managers Acting as Volunteers in an Entrepreneurial Mentoring Organization
AbstractVolunteering in later life is an important way of staying involved in one ’s community and engaging in a meaningful activity that has a positive impact on others. Previous research has mainly described the antecedents and consequences of volunteering; the process and experiences associated with performing this role has been less studied. The aim of this study was to ass ess the positive and negative experiences of older managers involved in an entrepreneurial mentoring organization. Fourteen older male volunteers were administered a semi-structured interview and the data obtained were analyzed thematically. The t...

Population Ageing and Inflation
AbstractRecently a view has emerged in the literature that low inflation may also be influenced, among other variables, by demography. However, there is little empirical evidence for this hypothesis. The motivation of this paper is to assess whether inflation is linked to the population age structure, and especially whether an increased old-age dependency ratio is correlated with a lower inflation rate. To check this hypothesis, a panel data model is used. The model is estimated for 32 OECD member economies over the period from 1971 to 2015. We regress the changes in consumer price inflation on a set of macroeconomic varia...

Impact of Parenthood, Informal Caregiving and its Combination on Self-Rated Health - a Population-Based Study in Switzerland
AbstractIn view of the lack of representative longitudinal studies comparing the effect of different caregiving situations on self-rated health, we aim to study the effect of parenting underage children and informal caregiving with or without children on self-rated health at baseline and one year later and whether this effect differs between the sexes. Sex-stratified linear mixed models were performed to assess the effect of different informal caregiving situations on self-rated health at baseline and one year later, using data from the Swiss Labor Force Survey. In Switzerland, the percentage of informal caregivers with an...

Developing Age-Friendly Cities: an Evidence-Based Evaluation Tool
This article describes an evidence-based evaluation tool for age-friendly initiatives whose development was informed by fieldwork in Liverpool/UK. The tool complements existing assessment frameworks, including those provided by WHO, by paying particular attention to the structures and processes underlying age-friendly initiatives. It reflects the complexity of age-friendliness by reconciling a focus on breadth with detail and depth, and it allows for a highly accessible visual presentation of findings. Using selected examples from Liverpool, the article illustrates how the evaluation tool can be applied to guide policy and...

Patterns of Frailty and Quality of Life among Older Adults: Comparative Analysis Using SAGE States of India
This study included a total of 6554 older adults aged 50  + years. Uttar Pradesh had the highest (18%) percentage of people without frailty (score < than 0.2) and Karnataka the lowest (10%). Rajasthan (5%) and Uttar Pradesh (4%) have the highest percentage of people in higher QoL score (QoL score  >  70). Frailty increased and QoL decreased in higher age groups for all the states, and was more frequent in women. Lower levels of frailty and high QoL were observed at higher levels of education and wealth. Education, residence, and wealth were protective factors for frailty in West Bengal, wherea s only education a...

Family Matters? The Importance of Relatives for Frail Elders ’ Mortality and Hospital Readmission
AbstractWe investigate the relationship between availability of relatives and mortality and hospital readmission within 30 days for patients aged 70 and above. The analysis contributes to the existing literature by applying a rich, high-quality data set and by its focus on frail elderly. Using Norwegian register data of 97,920 patients who have had an emergency hospital admission in the period 2009 –2013, we employ a linear probability model where we account for a wide range of patient, municipality, and time characteristics. Our results show that having a spouse and at least one child is associated negatively with morta...

Measures of Population Ageing in Australia from 1950 to 2050
This study utilises annual historic and forecasted population figures from the UN World Population Prospects (2015 Revision) to describe Australia ’s population changes for the period 1950–2050. A number of population indices have been employed to describe these changes. Specifically, we constructed population pyramids and computed measures including economic dependency ratios, support ratios, ageing/Billeter indices and coefficients of in flow, outflow and exchange of productive populations. Our results suggest that a combination of factors including declining fertility and mortality have contributed to Australia’s ...
