Representations of Ageing in Contemporary Zimbabwe: A Gerontological Reading of NoViolet Bulawayo ’s (2013) We Need New Names
AbstractWhile many studies have interrogated the novelWe Need New Names, on topics such as citizenship, migration, and transnationalism, there is still much more that readers can learn through interrogating the author ’s depiction of older adults’ experiences of ageing in place, ageism, healthy ageing and intergenerational relationships in Post-colonial Zimbabwe. It is argued that in so far as ageing is concerned, the novel presents a very grim picture of older adults caught up and responding to the circumsta nces of a country in the throes of a deep social, political and economic crisis. Urban poverty is portrayed as ...

Who are ‘Multi-Helpers’? Profile of Older Adults Engaging in Multiple Help-Giving Activities
This study considers older adults providing multiple types of support toward different parties in both public and private domains, referred to as ‘multi-helpers’. Although individuals involved in multiple help-giving activities can be important actors at individual, community, and societal levels, few studies have evaluated their characteristics. Using population-based data for older Finns (n = 2,174) we explored the profiles of multi-helpers for provision of: (1) instrumental help to friends and relatives; (2) financial aid to friends and relatives; (3) volunteering; and (4) charitable giving. Of the respondents, ...

Perceived Factors Influencing Younger Adults ’ Rural-Urban Migration and its Implications on Left Behind Older Parents in Nsukka LGA: Practice Considerations for Gerontological Social Workers
AbstractAs the number of young adults moving to urban areas increases, so does the number of older parents who are left behind in rural areas, where they face loneliness, isolation, hunger, and a lack of social support and care. The lack of remittances and alternative arrangements for caring for the migrant children ’s elderly parents, as well as the lack of social support networks, makes it difficult for them to cope on their own. The purpose of this study is to ascertain how the migration of younger adults affects the well-being of the left-behind older parents in Nsukka LGA, Enugu State, and to recommend w ays to impr...

Residential Age Segregation: Evidence from a Rapidly Ageing Asian City
AbstractThe problem of residential age segregation has been relatively under-studied, since spatial separation of older and younger people tends to be normalized. Prior literature demonstrates that age segregated environments may be socially isolating, especially for older adults, which may have detrimental impacts on their physical and mental health. While there are some studies on residential age segregation in Western contexts, there is scarce literature on age segregation in Asian cities. This mixed methods study examines changing patterns of residential age segregation in Hong Kong, through analyzing a combination of ...

Does BMI Really Matter to Our Overall Health? Findings from a Cross-sectional Analysis of Middle-aged and Older Adults in India
AbstractWe explored the association of body mass index (BMI) with overall health among middle-aged and older Indian adults. The cross-sectional sample included 42,575 respondents (45 years) from the Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI), Wave 1 (2017-18), including middle-aged (23,811) and older adults (18,764). Overall health was assessed by using 19 health indicators, including 10 chronic diseases. Binary logistic regressions were utilized to examine the effect. The overweight and obese older adults were associated with higher life satisfaction (LS), happiness, better handgrip strength (HGS), better cognition (CS), an...

Why I Have Not Taken the COVID-19 Vaccine ” a Descriptive Qualitative Study of Older Adults’ Perceived Views of COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake in Nigeria
AbstractGlobally, the COVID-19 vaccine uptake is increasing, but slowly among older adults residing in lower and middle-income countries, including Nigeria. Following this, we explored the perceived views of older adults on the uptake of the COVID-19 vaccine in Nigeria. We adopted a qualitative descriptive study design and purposively selected and interviewed 16 retirees of older adults. Data were analyzed using conventional content analysis. Findings show that older adults ’ willingness to receive the COVID-19 vaccine was dissuaded by their past experiences with the government, religion, and Western media, including aff...

Longevity Science and Women ’s Health and Wellbeing
This article draws attention to four distinct ways an applied gerontological intervention designed to increase the humanhealthspan via “rate (of ageing) control” could positively impact the health and wellbeing of women in today’s ageing world. The four benefits examined are: (1) improving women’s health in late life; (2) increasing reproductive longevity and improving maternal health, (3) reducing the financial vulnerabili ty many women experience at advanced ages (especially in the developing world); and (4) reducing the caring burdens which typically fall, at least disproportionately, on daughters to care for th...

Uncovering Spatial Patterns and Temporal Trends in the Ageing of the Tokyo Metropolis Population
AbstractUrban populations are ageing, but the spatial and temporal distribution of the older adult population is highly heterogeneous, which has implications for resource allocation, service provision, and infrastructure needs. Based on the method proposed by Atkins& Tonts (2016), we used the interplay between changes in the number and proportion of the older adult population to identify population ageing types: accumulation (both the number and proportion of the older adult population increases); decline (both the number and the proportion of the older adult population decreases); dilution (the number of individuals i...

Changing Patterns of One-Person and One-Couple-Only Households in India
This study examines the change in the pattern of one-person (OP) and one-couple-only (OC) households in India for the period 1993 –2050. Household-level data was obtained from three rounds of the National Family Health Survey and closely matched with the estimates of the Census. We adopted the spline method for age smoothing, the ordinary least squares regression method for examining the factors affecting OP and OC household s, and the logistic curve for making projections. The findings show that during 2015–16, 4% of the households in India were OP households, which figure is expected to become 5.5% (4.9%-5.6%) by 203...

Economic Disadvantage Among Older People in Rural Indonesia: Risk and Protective Factors
AbstractLittle research attention has been given to investigative inequalities in the economic wellbeing of older persons in rural Indonesia. This paper aims to investigate factors contributing to the level of the economic disadvantage of older persons and the influence of financial support from adult children in relieving old-age poverty. Data are drawn from the 2016 Ageing in Rural Indonesian Study (ARIS). The sample size was 1,629 respondents collected from six villages across Indonesia. Using a multidimensional economic disadvantage measure, we found that 12% of older persons in the study sites have economic disadvanta...
