Can the internet mitigate the negative effect of widowhood on Quality of Life? A gender analysis
This study focuses on 31,814 individuals aged 65 or over residing in 17 European countries who participated in Wave 6 of SHARE – the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe. The linear regression analyses highlighted that the role of the Internet in the relationship between widowhood and Quality of Life varies according to gender. More specifically, in Europe, the Quality of Life for widowed women aged 65+ using the Internet is .414 higher (CI=.006 to .0822) than widows who do not use the Internet and married women or women in a de facto relationship whether or not they use the Internet. The results have relevan...

Experiences of Abuse and Neglect of Older Adults in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp, Lugbe, Abuja, Nigeria
AbstractThe activities of insurgent groups like Boko-Haram have led to the displacement of millions of Nigerians, including a large population of older people who are made more vulnerable to new and old challenges associated with aging. Our study used qualitative art-based graphic elicitations and interviews to collect data on older people ’s experiences of abuse while living in displacement in Abuja, Nigeria. The data were analysed thematically, and our findings revealed that displacement increased abuse, and the vulnerability of co-migrant family members led to widespread neglect. This abuse caused perceived fear and a...

An Assessment of Mexico ’s Situation Based on three Global Indexes on Healthy Aging, and its Use on the Design of Public Policy
AbstractThe development of synthetic indexes to measure how societies undertake population aging has become relevant during the last decade due to international interest in responding to demographical changes and in elevating older adults ’ standards of living. The measurements proposed are the Global Age Watch Index (GAI), the Active Aging Index (AAI), and the Aging Society Index (ASI). This document aims to present and discuss Mexico’s results on all three indexes and to contribute to the general discussion on the indexes’ ab ility to design and implement public policies in specific contexts. Mexico got different r...

Ageing and Mental Health in Canada: Perspectives from Law, Policy, and Longitudinal Research
AbstractCanada is a relatively young, geographically-diverse country, with a larger proportion of the population aged over 65 than under 15. Increasing alongside the number of ageing Canadians is the number of older adults that live with mental health challenges. Across the life course, one in five Canadians will experience a mental health disorder with many more living with subclinical symptoms. For these individuals, their lived experience may be directly impacted by the contemporary laws and policies governing mental illness. Examining and reviewing the historical context of mental health and older adults, we provide in...

Health Outcomes of Elder Orphans: an Umbrella and Scoping Review of the Literature
AbstractAs the population of elder orphans grows, little research has investigated the health outcomes of these socially and physically isolated older adults without caregiving support. Umbrella and scoping reviews were performed for studies examining health outcomes of older adults experiencing elements of elder orphanhood. Studies published 2010- June 2021 and indexed on PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, Medline, or SocINDEX were eligible. Results of included studies were examined both by individual category and overall to determine overlapping outcomes.Umbrella review returned 1686 studies, with 14 meeting criteria for so...

What Do You Mean, ‘How Do I Feel about Ageing?’: Exploring Ageing Concepts on the Island of Gozo
AbstractMalta is experiencing a strong trend toward population ageing. In 2014, the government implemented an active ageing policy designed to address the perceived economic and social ramifications of an ageing population. In a commitment to break away from perceptions of ageing that equate with infirmity and decline, the policy underscores independence, productivity, and activity as meaningful goals in later life. Ethnographic data gathered from conversations with both Gozitan-born and English expatriate retirees (UK expats), investigated their perceptions of ageing. Tensions were revealed between the active ageing parad...

Natural and cultural longevity zones from an anthropological and geographical viewpoint
AbstractThere are natural and cultural variables that have an impact on the longevity of older adults. In the case of the former, it is necessary to know and territorialize them, and in the case of the latter, it is necessary to understand them through the analysis of customs and lifestyles. The zones of natural longevity, for this analysis, are those in which low levels of ionizing and ultraviolet radiation converge, as well as the presence of water containing deuterium oxide among its components. To address the cultural longevity zones, an ethnography was carried out in which it was observed that both the consumption of ...

Trends and Characteristics of Labor Force Participation Among Older Persons in Developing Asia: Literature Review and Cross-Country Assessment
AbstractThis paper examines the pattern and prospects of labor force participation of older persons in developing Asia. We review relevant literature and conduct a detailed analysis of descriptive statistics drawn from the labor force survey micro data of selected countries in the region. Evidence suggests that the structure of social security and pensions, education and health status of workers, household structures and gender norms, and technological change and adoption at the workplace explain the observed patterns of labor supply among older persons in advanced economies. Some of these factors are equally relevant in d...

Food Insecurity and Malnutrition among Indian Older Adults: Findings from Longitudinal Ageing Study in India, 2017-18
AbstractThe study aims to assess the prevalence of food insecurity and malnutrition and to investigate the association between food insecurity, sociodemographic characteristics, and malnutrition among Indian older adults. Data for 28,004 older adults (60  + years) was extracted from Wave-1 of the Longitudinal Aging Study in India, 2017-18. Bivariate analysis was used for prevalence estimates. Multinomial logistic regression provided relative risk ratios (RRR) to determine the association. About 45% of older adults were food insecure and nearly half were malnourished (underweight − 26.7%, overweight − 22.2%). O...

Never Thought I was Going to be Placed in a Situation Like This: In the Shoes of the Doctor Responsible for Municipal Health, Back in My Country, Per ú
AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic changed the way of living on the planet and, in my case, revealed the fragility of primary care services to respond to a health emergency that mainly affected older adults. Upon obtaining my medical degree, I felt guaranteed to have the skills to be a primary care physician; however, the coronavirus gave me “a reality bath with the aroma of impotence, bewilderment, and abandonment.“ Contradictory provisions and regulations, absence of a continuous policy, poor leadership, insufficient resources, and mismanagement by the Ministry of Health. Scandals of possible corruption and vices in the p...

Work and Family Transitions Throughout Adulthood and the Impact on Health: A Systematic Review
AbstractIt has been argued that ‘successful aging’ should be inclusive of a dynamic perspective that incorporates context, social influences, and social structure. Previous research has acknowledged that transitions in work and family life have implications for health and wellbeing. However, such transitions have typically bee n explored independently and there is a need for collective exploration. This systematic review of studies aimed to identify transitions that have been commonly investigated and synthesize the relationship between work and family-life transitions on health outcomes. Searches were conducted across...

Sustainability and community action: another view on ageing in rural Mexico
AbstractIn this article we explore the role of rural elders in the construction of alternative processes of community life that translate into niches of sustainability. We identify how the strengthening of community association enables indigenous peasant communities to build a resilient generational and transgenerational memory in which the structure of community care and transmission is decisively shaped. Our research demonstrates that the model of the retired elder isolated from his or her community is anachronistic. The evidence shows that their role has changed decisively and no longer supports structures that are only...
