Senior Tourism in Italy: the Role of Disability and Socioeconomic Characteristics
AbstractThe pursuit of tourism activities represents an important contributor to individuals ’ well-being in older age. While current generations of pensioners enjoy on average unprecedented levels of financial resources, a large amount of spare time, and often retire while still in good health, the onset of disability and financial constraints might hinder the pursuit of tourism. The pap er uses data drawn from a large Italian population survey, “Perspectives on daily life”, and provides empirical evidence on the probability of undertaking tourism in older age and the role of personal charachteristics acting as trig...

Psychological Functioning and Living Arrangements among Older Thai People
AbstractIn the next two decades, one in three people in Thailand will be older adults aged 60 or over. Industrialization and socioeconomic development have encouraged the migration of young adults from rural to urban areas which has transformed the living arrangements of some older adults. Using culturally sensitive measures, this study investigates the association between living arrangements and psychological functioning net of personal and contextual factors. Data are from a survey of 638 Thai people aged 60 and over conducted in 2012. Results from multiple regression analyses indicate that personal and contextual factor...

Social Support and Self-Rated Health among Older Men and Women in Vietnam
This study examined social support factors associated with self-rated health among older men and women people in Vietnam, using data from the Vietnam Ageing Survey (VNAS) in 2011 with 2538 older people, including 1017 men and 1521 women. Applying statistical tests and multivariable logistic regressions, this study showed that social support – presented by structural and functional supports – was strongly associated with health status of both older men and women. Particularly, living alone, number of children living nearby and average frequency talking on phone with children were significantly associated with older wome...

Active Ageing Index in Russia - Identifying Determinants for Inequality
AbstractThis paper is aimed at the development of a tool analysing the AAI results for the Russian older citizens from different population groups, as well as at identifying factors underlying the inequalities in active ageing outcomes by calculation the AAI on the national and individual levels. The adaptation of the methodology of the AAI to the individual-level data and the limitations of the approach are explicitly explained. The older generations of Russia show relatively high levels of education, financial security and engagement in family care, especially in the care to children. The most significant potential for d...

The Effect of an Increase of the Retirement Age on the Health, Well-Being, and Labor Force Participation of Older Workers: a Systematic Literature Review
AbstractTo sustain a viable public pension system, many governments have increased the statutory retirement age and delayed the age of entitlement to public pension benefits. This systematic literature review investigates the empirical evidence on the effects of increasing the retirement age on the health, well-being, and labor force participation of older workers. Optimized and broad search queries were used to search for empirical evidence in four databases: EconLit, PsycINFO, PubMed, and SocINDEX. The systematic literature search was conducted in May 2019. Snowballing was performed on the reference lists of the publicat...

The Impact of Informal Caregiving on Labour Supply Before and After a Parent ’s Death
This study investigates how having a parent in need of care affects sons’ and daughters’ labour market participation. The question is investigated by analysing longitudinal data from the Norwegian life course, ageing and generation study. The empirical strategy is first to use r egister information about parents’ demise as an indicator for amplified care needs in the period prior to their death and explore patterns in labour market participation (employment and earnings) before and after the death of a parent. Then, register data are combined with survey data in order to separate caregivers from non-caregivers prior ...

Out-of-Home Mobility and Social Participation of Older People: a Photo-Based Ambulatory Assessment Study
AbstractResearch has shown that social participation contributes to older people ’s healthy ageing. Out-of-home mobility may promote higher levels of social participation among older people. However, mobility and social participation are sophisticated constructs. Social participation can be distinguished among different levels, such as being alone, being alone surrounded by ot hers, interacting with others or engaging in activities together. Social participation and time spent in out-of-home-mobility can be difficult to remember and therefore difficult to assess. Picture-based ambulatory assessment provides valid and rel...

Abuse, Neglect, and Disrespect against Older Adults in India
AbstractAbuse, Violence, and neglect against men and women have for too long remained a relatively ‘unseen’ part, being a social problem internationally and even in India. The rising proportion of elderly in India exhibits concern for the well-being of this section of the population. Abuse against the elderly is recognized as an important challenge to elderly health, but its determinants are not yet well understood. Primary research on the issue of elder abuse and neglect in India is limited due to tremendous reluctance to discuss intergenerational conflicts. Thus, the objective of the study was to find out the prevale...

Extending the Active Ageing Index to Hong Kong Using a Mixed-Method Approach: Feasibility and Initial Results
AbstractThe rapid demographic transition heightens the urgency to develop a monitoring mechanism for policymakers to evaluate the impact of population ageing. The Active Ageing Index (AAI), developed for 28 European Union countries, has served as a global quantitative toolkit to benchmark the diverse experience of active ageing and older people ’s potential. One can presume that the experiences of Asian elders are different to those with Europeans who have different cultural backgrounds. Thus, an approach that incorporates Eastern culture needs to be developed. In this paper, key findings of the focus group discussions w...

REACH: Solutions for Technology-Based Prevention and Empowerment for Older People and their Caregivers
AbstractREACH stands for “Responsive Engagement of the Elderly Promoting Activity and Customized Healthcare”. Sustained physical activity matters greatly to the health and well-being of older people and significantly improves their chance of maintaining independent living. It can make a difference across the whole care continuum as well as in almost every setting. Therefore, REACH solutions focus on the systematic, target-oriented increase of physical activity of older people, and tackle the whole prevention spectrum (primary, secondary, and tertiary). It seeks to empower older people and their formal and informal care...

Acceptable Walking and Cycling Distances and their Correlates among Older Japanese Adults
This study investigated acceptable walking and cycling distances and their correlates. Cross-sectional data were obtained in 2013 from 8227 people aged ≥65 years in Kasama City, Japan. Acceptable walking distance was assessed by asking “What distance would you walk to a destination from your house?” (responses: ≤ 300 m, ≤ 500 m, ≤ 1 km, ≤ 2 km, ≤ 3 km, and >  3 km). Acceptable cycling distance was assessed using a similar question, with seven response options, including “cannot ride a bicycle.” The most frequently selected acceptable walking distance was ≤1 km. Those who could ride a bi...

Advanced Sensing and Human Activity Recognition in Early Intervention and Rehabilitation of Elderly People
We describe how this approach is first tested with healthy people in a laboratory environment and then transferred to elderly people and patients in a hospital environment. We also describe the implementation of an activity recognition chain (ARC) that is commonly used to analyse human activity data by means of machine learning methods and aims to detect activity patterns. Finally, the results obtained so far are presented and discussed as well as remaining problems that should be addressed in future research. (Source: Journal of Population Ageing)
