We identified English- and Chinese-language published reports of randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effects of patient activation interventions for adults with chronic diseases. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed by two reviewers independently...

Facilitators of Self-Initiated HIV Testing Among Youths: A Qualitative Study
Conclusions The findings of this study advance scholarly understanding regarding the predictors of self-initiated testing and provide critical information necessary to further improve evidence-based nursing clinical practice and develop public health nursing interventions that target self-initiated HIV testing. Encouraging self-initiated HIV testing is an effective approach to increasing testing rates and, consequently, preventing new HIV transmissions in this vulnerable population. Person-Centered Care, Job Stress, and Quality of Life Among Long-Term Care Nursing Staff
This study aims to investigate correlations among job stress, quality of life, and person-centered care of nurses as well as factors affecting the person-centered care abilities of nursing staff working at long-term care hospitals. Methods Nursing staff (N = 183) in three long-term care hospitals in South Korea completed a questionnaire on job stress, quality of life, and person-centered care. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 program for descriptive statistics, using an independent t test, a one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple stepwise regression analyses. Results Signi...

The Experiences of Couples Affected by Stroke and Nurses Managing Patient Rehabilitation: A Descriptive Study in Singapore
Conclusions/Implications for Practice The meaning of recovery differs between patients and their informal and formal care providers. This issue should be explored in patient–provider conversations, as these conversations highlight the values and preferences that affect the stroke recovery trajectory. Enhancing shared decision making by patients, spousal caregivers, and healthcare providers during the stroke trajectory may promote the alignment of values that are critical to the stroke recovery experience. Further research into whether and how to incorporate shared decision making in rehabilitation hospital settings as ...

Effects of Predischarge Patient Education Combined With Postdischarge Follow-Ups on Self-Care, Readmission, Sleep, and Depression in Patients With Heart Failure
Conclusions/Implications for Practice The effect of this intervention was not found to be substantial, indicating a need to design more efficacious and powerful interventions. Hospitalized patients must receive patient education before discharge to foster their self-care knowledge and skills regarding self-care at home. Strategies are needed to help nurses provide patient education in a time-efficient manner. (Source: Journal of Nursing Research)

Effects of an Active Music Therapy Program on Functional Fitness in Community Older Adults
This study was designed to test the effectiveness of a 3-month active group music therapy program on the functional fitness of community older adults in Taiwan. Methods A quasi-experimental design with repeated measures was applied. A convenience cluster sample of older adults was drawn from seven senior-citizen activity centers in southern Taiwan. All participants were assigned to either an experimental group (n = 77) or a comparison group (n = 69) based on the requests of each senior center. The experimental group participated in the active group music therapy program for 3 months (twice per week and 60 minutes per se...

The Effects of Shared Decision Making on Different Renal Replacement Therapy Decisions in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease
Conclusions/Implications for Practice The SDM program may be an effective intervention for complex decision-making processes, such as the process involved in making renal replacement treatment decisions. The SDM program group intervention improved decisional conflict and decision self-efficacy. Thus, to improve patients’ decision-making processes, the application of an SDM program focused on the personal values and opinions of patients with ESRD will be necessary. Physicians and case managers of patients with ESRD should act in complementary and cooperative roles in SDM programs. (Source: Journal of Nursing Research)

The Effect of Semirecumbent and Right Lateral Positions on the Gastric Residual Volume of Mechanically Ventilated, Critically Ill Patients
Conclusion/Implications for Practice Positioning patients in the RL and SR positions rather than in the supine position is an effective strategy to reduce GRV. Furthermore, placing patients in either the RL or SR position is an effective intervention to promote faster digestion and feedings. (Source: Journal of Nursing Research)

Properties of the Early Symptom Measurement of Post-Stroke Depression: Concurrent Criterion Validity and Cutoff Scores
Background Early-stage post-stroke depression (PSD) increases the risk of stroke-related disability and mortality in the first year of recovery. Presently available screening measures were developed to assess major depression, and none used a PSD screening criterion that was systematically developed and tested in populations of patients with acute stroke. Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate the concurrent criterion validity and cutoff scoring of the Early Symptom Measurement of Post-Stroke Depression (ESM-PSD) instrument in hospitalized patients with acute stroke. Methods Purposive recruitment of newl...

Effects of Auricular Acupressure in Patients on Hemodialysis
Background Although studies on the effectiveness of self-management in limiting fluid intake in patients on hemodialysis have been conducted extensively, xerostomia, which is a powerful stimulus of fluid intake, has received scarce attention. Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 4-week auricular acupressure treatment on xerostomia, salivary flow rate, interdialytic weight gain, constipation, and diet-related quality of life in patients on hemodialysis in Korea. Methods This was a randomized controlled trial. Sixty patients on hemodialysis were randomly assigned to either the experimenta...

The Relationship Between Positive Perceptions Toward Organizational Politics and the Work-Related Outcomes of Nurses
Conclusions Nurses who perceive the work environment to be political will experience greater levels of stress, turnover intention, and burnout and lower levels of job satisfaction. Politics is an issue that should be handled by all levels of management. Managers should use supportive, nonpolitical workplace strategies to improve the work-related outcomes of employees. The Related Factors of Nurses’ Participation and Perceived Benefits and Barriers in Health Policy Making
Conclusions/Implications for Practice Despite the importance of the nursing role in health polices, this study indicates that nurses participate at only a moderate level in health policy-making activities. Providing more information to nurses regarding health policies, enhancing nurses’ image of their job and their perceptions about the importance of their participation in the health policy, increasing partnerships with nurses at the upper levels of health services management, and supporting nursing professional organizations in the field of health policy are potential strategies for encouraging greater nursing partici...
