Perceived Stress and Depressive Symptoms Are Associated With Emotional Eating but Not Nutritional Intake During Pregnancy: A Prospective Cohort Study
We examined residualized change in stress and depressive symptoms from second to third trimester of pregnancy; positive residualized change scores indicated increased stress and depressive symptoms.ResultsParticipants showed significant improvement in emotional eating and nutritional intake from second to third trimester of pregnancy (P< .001 for both). At second trimester, higher depressive symptoms were associated with a greater likelihood of emotional eating (P< .001) and worse nutritional intake (P = .044) at third trimester. Increased stress and depressive symptoms during pregnancy were both associated with incr...

Treatment of Mood and Depressive Disorders With Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Efficacy Review
AbstractThere has been a steady increase in people with symptoms of depression over the past several years (since 2011). The further increase in stress and depression in the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic was accompanied by an increase in unmet mental health needs. Many have turned to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies such as bright-light therapy, yoga, meditation, and dietary supplements like St. John's wort or folic acid. The reliability of evidence for use of CAM therapies for depression has remained low. There are few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in the current literature and poor metho...

Associations Between State Practice Regulations and Access to Midwifery Care
This study aimed to identify associations between state policies and access to midwifery care. Identifying policies that facilitate increased access to midwives will help policymakers determine the best methods for increasing access to midwives in their states.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted at the county level as a secondary analysis of National Vital Statistics data from the Natality online database. The unit of analysis was counties with populations of at least 100,000, and the outcome was the proportion of births attended by midwives in 2019. The potential predictors of increased access to midwifery car...

Homeopathy: A State of the Science Review With Recommendations for Practical Therapies in Midwifery Practice
AbstractA substantial proportion of adults and children in the United States use complementary and alternative health practices, including homeopathy. Many homeopathic therapies are readily available over the counter, and many individuals access and self-administer these therapies with little or no guidance from health care practitioners. In addition, patients and health care providers are often confused by terminologies associated with complementary practices and may be unable to distinguish homeopathy from naturopathy, herbalism, holistic medicine, Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine, or other forms of health care. Co...

A Preliminary Investigation of Prenatal Anxiety Sensitivity and Postpartum Distress
DiscussionAlbeit preliminary, results suggest prenatal anxiety sensitivity may be an important and malleable risk factor associated with several mental health concerns common in the perinatal period. Anxiety sensitivity may be targeted with brief interventions to prevent or reduce postpartum distress. Reducing prenatal anxiety sensitivity has the potential prevent the onset or worsening of psychological disorders among women and, in turn, may improve infant and child outcomes. Future studies should replicate these findings in a larger sample. (Source: Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health)
