Adapting Mindfulness ‐Based Cognitive Therapy for Perinatal Depression to Improve Access and Appeal of Preventive Care
AbstractExisting and emerging evidence indicates that perinatal depression is a key contributor to preventable morbidity and mortality during and after childbearing. Despite this, there are few effective options for prevention and treatment that are readily accessible for and appealing to pregnant people. Aspects of routine health care systems contribute to this situation. Furthermore, societal and health care systems factors create additional barriers for people of color, people living in rural regions, and people living in poverty. Our interprofessional team of perinatal care providers, mental health providers, community...

Midwife ‐Led Ultrasound Scanning to Date Pregnancy in Malawi: Development of a Novel Training Program
We describe the development and piloting of a bespoke course to teach midwives 3 fundamental components of early antenatal ultrasound scanning: (1) to identify the number of fetuses, (2) to confirm fetal viability, and (3) to determine gestational age. Having established that 5 days is insufficient, we propose that the minimum duration required to train ultrasound-naive midwives to competency is 10 days. Our completed program therefore consists of one and one-half days of didactic teaching, followed by 8 and one-half days of supervised hands-on practical training in which trainees are assessed on their skills. This package...

Influence of Maternal Mobility and Position Changes in Low ‐Dose Epidural Labor: A Systematic Review with Meta‐Analysis
DiscussionAlthough no clear benefit was observed for mobilization in epidural labor, no detrimental effects were found either, so perinatal care providers should encourage mobilization if the laboring person so desires, throughout the entire childbirth process. Initiating and Supporting Breastfeeding: Guidelines for Interventions during the Perinatal Period from the French National College of Midwives
AbstractExclusive breastfeeding is recommended for children for the first 4 to 6 months of life, with complementary foods added thereafter. It is the most ecological way of protecting the child's and mother's health. Training of health professionals is required to avoid transmitting inconsistent information in 3 areas: 1) implementing these 3 predictors: safe skin-to-skin, first breastfeed, and rooming-in 24/7; 2) teaching and monitoring: i) early signs of waking and feeding rhythms, ii) positioning and latching, and iii) signs of effective transfer; and 3) referring women to specialized support services if difficulties ar...

Newborns' Bonding and Attachment, Their Rhythms and Needs, Supporting Parents Appropriately: Guidelines for Interventions During the Perinatal Period from the French National College Of Midwives
AbstractA newborn's sleep-wake rhythms are very specific, neurologically determined, and different from the pattern of adults; they require an adaptable and predictable response by parents, which will promotes bonding and attachments, constructed at the early stages of development. It also will influence the quality of subsequent emotional relationships and adaptation to life events. This parental adaptability should receive multiprofessional support starting in the perinatal period, focused on the screening and management of psychological vulnerability. Intervention during the Perinatal Period: Synthesis of the Clinical Practice Guidelines from the French National College of Midwives
AbstractThese clinical practice guidelines from the French National College of Midwives (CNSF) are intended to define the messages and the preventive interventions to be provided to women and co-parents by the different professionals providing care to women or their children during the perinatal period. These guidelines are divided into 10 sections, corresponding to 4 themes: 1/ the adaptation of maternal behaviors (physical activity, psychoactive agents); 2/ dietary  behaviors; 3/ household exposure to toxic substances (household uses, cosmetics); 4/ promotion of child health (breastfeeding, attachment and bonding, scree...

Protecting Infants from Sudden Unexpected Infant Death: Guidelines for Interventions during the Perinatal Period from the French National College of Midwives
AbstractWith 300 –400 annual deaths in France, sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) is the leading cause of mortality in France among infants from the end of their first through their 12th month of life. These clinical practice guidelines aim to identify strategies for (future) parents to prevent avoidable SUIDs . They are based on a narrative literature review and an analysis of the existing reports and guidelines available on the topic in 2019–2020. In summary, it is recommended that parents ensure that their infants sleep on their back on a firm, empty surface in a sufficiently ventilated environment, share the pa...

Use of Cosmetic Products in Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women and Young Children: Guidelines for Interventions during the Perinatal Period from the French National College of Midwives
AbstractWe conducted a literature review focusing on the use and health effects of cosmetics, especially among pregnant and lactating women and young children. Based on these data, we propose clinical practice guidelines for health care professionals to use for informing and advising their patients. These include the recommendations that families: (1) reduce the number and the frequency of use (grade B) and the amount applied (expert consensus) of all cosmetic products during the perinatal period and among children; (2) prefer simple, fragrance-free, and rinsable products, with short ingredient lists (expert consensus); an...

Young Children and Screens: Guidelines for Intervention during the Perinatal Period from the French National College of Midwives
This article reports the published data about children's screen use in France and elsewhere. We next synthesize the scientific literature on the relations between screen use and child development and then summarize current national and international guidelines about children's screen use before the age of 5 years. Based on these elements, we propose clinical practice guidelines for counseling women during the perinatal period.Pr écis: Current knowledge on children's screen use and its relationship to their development is summarized including guidelines and suggestions to help parents monitor screen use. Domestic Exposure to Chemicals in Household Products, Building Materials, Decoration, and Pesticides: Guidelines for Interventions During the Perinatal Period from the French National College of Midwives
ConclusionHealth care professionals can provide advice to parents during the perinatal period to diminish exposure to household pollutants. The lack of interventional studies nonetheless limits the level of evidence for most of these recommendations. (Source: Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health)

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) or Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma from Shaking: Guidelines for Interventions During the Perinatal Period from the French National College Of Midwives
AbstractShaken baby syndrome is the most severe head injury in children. Shaking is an extremely violent gesture, often repeated. The children affected are generally less than a year old, in 2/3 of cases, less than 6 months old. More than 10% of them die, and more than three-quarters of the survivors have long-term effects. Prevention is therefore essential. When a parent (or any person) is strongly upset by an infant's uncalmable crying, the best thing for them to do is to lay the child down in a supine position in his or her bed, leave the room, and then ask for help. Beneficial Effects of Maternal Physical Activity during Pregnancy on Fetal, Newborn, and Child Health: Guidelines for Interventions during the Perinatal Period from the French National College of Midwives
The objective of this work is to synthesize current knowledge about the effects of maternal physical activity during pregnancy on children's health. During the prenatal and postnatal periods, maternal physical activity has protective effects against the risks of macrosomia, obesity, and other associated cardiometabolic disorders. Even though longitudinal studies in humans are still necessary to validate them, these effects have been consistently observed in animal studies. A remarkable effect of maternal physical activity is its positive role on neurogenesis, language development, memory, and other cognitive functions rela...
