A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial of Prenatal Oral Hygiene Education in Pregnancy ‐Associated Gingivitis
This study was conducted to determine if an oral health intervention (OHI), including oral hygiene education delivered by nurse-led staff and an advanced over-the-counter (OTC) oral home care regimen, improved gingival inflammation in pregnant women with moderate-to-severe gingivitis compared with a standard oral hygiene control group.MethodsThis was a multicenter, randomized, controlled, single-masked, parallel group clinical trial conducted in obstetrics clinics of 2 medical centers. A total of 750 pregnant women between 8 and 24 weeks of pregnancy with at least 20 natural teeth and moderate-to-severe gingivitis (>30 ...

Creating an Alianza: Group Perinatal Education for Newly Immigrated Latinx Pregnant People
AbstractPregnant people who are recent immigrants often face barriers navigating the health care system and establishing a support network to sustain them through pregnancy and new parenthood. TheCultivando una Nueva Alianza (CUNA) program from the Children's Home Society of New Jersey was created to address these obstacles. For over 20 years, CUNA has collaborated with local midwives to develop a program for newly immigrated, Spanish-speaking Latinx pregnant people. The curriculum, facilitated by trained members of the community, provides education around pregnancy, birth, and early parenting and connects participants wit...

Screening for Heat Related Illness in Pregnant People: Sample Case Study for Clinician Education
AbstractClimate change has significant implications for pregnant people. The Heat-Related Illness Screening Tool was developed by faculty in the nurse-led Center for Climate Change, Climate Justice, and Health at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. In an effort to integrate content on the health effects of climate change on pregnant people, faculty in the Women's Health/Gender-Related Nurse Practitioner program in the School of Nursing developed a case study that incorporated heat and environmental exposures in pregnancy into an existing module on preterm birth. The case study aims to increase awareness about the inte...

Supporting Families Facing Lactation Anaphylaxis: A Case Report
AbstractLactation anaphylaxis is a rare condition that may occur consequent to breastfeeding. Early identification and management of symptoms is paramount to the physical well-being of the birthing person. Supporting newborn feeding goals is also a key component of care. In cases in which the birthing person wants to exclusively feed human milk, planning should include streamlined access to donor milk. Clear communication between health care providers and developing systems to access donor milk for parental indications may help address barriers. (Source: Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health)

Maternal Adaptive Capacity: A Strengths ‐Based Theory to Guide Maternal Health Research
AbstractThe United States is experiencing a rise in maternal morbidity and mortality that disproportionately affects marginalized groups. Maternal health research is often designed through a lens of deficit, which perpetuates bias and negatively affects care. The purpose of this article is to describe the development of the theory of maternal adaptive capacity, a strengths-based approach to maternal health research that has the potential to promote new discovery in research, reduce biases, empower individuals and improve health outcomes. Walker and Avant's approach to theory derivation is applied to the framework of vulner...

Women's Birth Beliefs During Pregnancy and Postpartum in the Netherlands: A Quantitative Cross ‐Sectional Study
In this study we explore women's beliefs about birth as a natural and medical process and the factors that are associated with women's birth beliefs.MethodsData were obtained from a cross-sectional survey of women living in the Netherlands asking them about their experiences during pregnancy and childbirth, including their beliefs about birth as a natural and medical process.ResultsA total of 3494 women were included in this study. Mean scores of natural birth beliefs ranged between 3.73 and 4.01 points, and medical birth belief scores ranged between 2.92 and 3.12 points. There were significant but very small changes betwe...

Internalized Weight Bias, Weight ‐Related Experiences, And Peripartum Weight
DiscussionPostpartum retention of weight gained during pregnancy, but not weight gain itself, was related to both IWB and depressive symptoms. The relationship between pregnancy-related weight changes and psychological distress is complex. Sociocultural pressures to return to a prepregnancy physical state swiftly after giving birth may increase risk for IWB during a time in life when stress is already likely to be high, posing additional psychological risk. IWB existing prepregnancy may also worsen postpartum self-concept, contributing to depression. This is the first study, to our knowledge, to directly assess association...

Applying Lessons Learned from the COVID ‐19 Pandemic to Future Threats to the Perinatal Care System
DiscussionDisaster preparedness and health system strengthening should address the importance childbearing people place on the relational aspects of care, need for options in decision-making, timely and accurate information sharing, and opportunity for a range of safe and supported birth settings. Mechanisms are needed to build system-level changes that respond to the self-expressed needs and priorities of childbearing people. (Source: Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health)

Factors Influencing Contraceptive Choice During the Postpartum Period: A Qualitative Systematic Review
The objective of this article is to identify the factors that influence the choice of contraceptive methods in the postpartum period.MethodsWe conducted a qualitative systematic review including articles published between 2000 and 2021 on postpartum contraception and its related influential factors. Relying on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and synthesis without meta-analysis checklists, the search strategy relied on a combination of 2 lists of keywords applied to 9 databases. A bias assessment was carried out with the help of the Cochrane's randomized controlled trial tool, the checklis...

Maternal Self ‐Efficacy as a Mediator in the Relationship Between Postpartum Depression and Maternal Role Competence: A Cross‐Sectional Survey
This study aimed to (1) examine the relationships among postpartum depression, maternal self-efficacy, and maternal role competence, and to (2) test whether maternal self-efficacy mediates the relationship between postpartum depression and maternal role competence.MethodsUsing a cross-sectional design, we conveniently sampled 343 postpartum mothers from 3 primary health care facilities in Eswatini. Data were collected using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Maternal Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, and Perceived Competence Scale. Multiple linear regression models and structural equation modeling were performed in IBM S...

Interventions to Reduce Inpatient and Discharge Opioid Prescribing for Postpartum Patients: A Systematic Review
DiscussionA variety of interventions aimed at reducing opioid use following birth have shown efficacy. Although it is not known if any single intervention is most effective, these data suggest that implementation of any number of interventions may be advantageous in reducing postpartum opioid use.
